Hey Wolf....do monkeys REALLY do it with footballs??
Wolf, is hay really for horses? And is grass really cheaper? I can't get grass to grow in a drought and I have no horses, so this is possibly an economical issue. I could grow hay and have horses. I need an answer. The livelyhood of my lawn and pet ownership depends on it!

Usually the Spider monkeys are the ones that try, but the football has always won.

Chop up as many cactus, sage, tumbleweeds, whatever, into little pieces, hack up the dirt where you wish grass to grow. Fill a tub with a keg of stale beer and the choppings until you get a soggy mulch. Spread it on the plot and plow it up. Water every other day, keeping the plot damp but not too wet. The beer and the plants should start giving you a green plot in a short time. The horses will love it, so if you get any horses, the grass will be cheaper after a while. Do a few plots at a time, and transfer some plugs into the newer plots. Stale beer is the trick. Oh yeah, I forgot. Buy some grass seeds if there are no more grass roots left where you want them.
Hey Wolfie, How much coffee do you drink a day, and whats its tensile strenth (your brewin strength, is it thick enuff to float a horseshoe on it and strong enuff to grow chest hairs on your chest and backside?? or is it watery and weak with little flavor?)

Coffee, I drink about three or four mugs a day, Rink. On weekends, I drink about two pots a day.:coffee: I like it brewed the Navy way, with a little bit of salt in the grounds. It's thick enough to put a bite in your tongue, and hair all over you. And I use milk and sugar in the first cup. The rest are straight black.

I slept late this morning. Okay, Rink. For a good, simple Navy coffee, get at least three different blends of coffee grounds and mix them together in equal amounts, but two or even one blend will do. Instead of the normal measurement for the coffee pot, add three fourths more, but you can add less if you prefer. Sprinkle just a little salt on the grounds and start the brew. This works better in a percolator. Just remember to use really cold water. Enjoy.
I am barefoot most of the time, but when I wear shoes, the ones that the Sears store here sells, still made in USA, are my favorite ones, lightweight and rugged enough for climbing trees with the grandkids.
I prefer simple foods, like baked potatoes and beef, or pork, or chicken, sometimes with mixed vegetables and white rice, and a huge tumbler of iced water.

Wolfcounsel

Okay, Unk.
I take that to mean the regular honeybee. They can fly just about any height, as long as the temperature and the air quantity are suitable. They are found as high up as the Himalayas. I'm not sure about the wasp type. Honeybees, as well as the African type, can also be outrun by an average person, since their flight speed is about 15 miles per hour tops.

I may disagree with you on one thing, and think that you are a total idiot, ON THAT THREAD, but when it moves off to another subject, I do not ALLOW my anger, or frustration to follow me to another thread, such as this one, because we may actually agree on this thread, and may be able to help each other prove another point, TOGETHER.

Okay, Prez. Why does a negative times a negative equal a positive? Give the math logic, please.
I'll answer that question
A negative times a negative always produces a positive number.
Now do I get my no-prize wolfie?
O gawd forgot to explain why they do that grumbles.
Ok ok ok I Think I can explain this
My book says this on the negative numbers
The opposite of a 5 is a -5.
The opposite of a 7 is a -7.
The opposite of a 1 is a -1.
The opposite of a -5 is - (-5), or 5.
The opposite of a -8 is - (-8), or 8.
So the opposite of a positive number is a negative number, and the opposite of a negative number is a positive number.
In effect...
The absolute value of a number is never a negative because it is a distance, and a distance is always measured in positive units (unless it happens to be 0).
Examples 5 = 5 The number of 5 is 5 units from 0
(-3) = 3 The number -3 is 3 units from 0
(-7) = 7 The number -7 is 7 units from 0
etc
Now do I get my no-prize?
Yes I need to re-read my math (If I'm gonna go back to school here soon.)
So thanks for makin me work at this lol.
Soooooooo
another example (yes this is the LAST One)
if A represents any positive number, then it is always true that:
-(-A) = A

If you have ABS in your car, you might have put a fault into your car's computer if you did a little by-pass. Use the hand signal in the meantime, and head for a reliable mechanic in the area. It might also be a loose wire causing the short (?), open, maybe. I would say 9 times out of 10, a loose wire or part is the culprit. Good luck.

Okay. Here is a simple explanation:
Get 10 blue chips and 10 red chips. The blue represent negative, and the red represent positive. I ask you a simple trivia question. Each correct answer, give me a blue chip and give yourself a red chip. You now have 11 red chips. If you answer incorrectly, give me a red chip and I will give you a blue chip. You will then have 11 blue and nine red.
Blue=negative 1 times negative answer=one wrong answer +
-------------------------------------------------------------
Red= positive 1 times positive answer=one right answer +
If I try to give you a - blue chip for a correct answer, you get a negative. If I try to give you a + red chip for an incorrect answer, you get a negative.
Clear as mud?
The negative sign deals with a mathematical representation of the number line, such as -10,000 feet to +10,000 feet, or something along the lines of actual physical things. In the middle is always zero.

I understand about number lines, and I know that minus times minus is spozed to be plus, but why?
Wolfcounsel
08-24-2005, 12:04 AM
Okay. Say you are on a mountain 20,000 feet high. Halfway up is your camp, at 10,000 feet. That is your reference. Below you is 10,000 feet, and above you is 10,000 feet. Go down 1000 feet and you went to -1000. At each -1000 feet, cut a foot off a 50 foot rope you are carrying. At -5000 feet, you will have cut off 5 feet of rope. Put those pieces in a bag and climb up. Every +1000 feet, take a foot of rope out of the bag and drop it. You now have 4 feet, now 3, now 2, now 1, and finally at your camp, you have no more pieces. Think about this concept for a while. You will be amazed.
DesertFox
08-24-2005, 12:08 AM

But why does a minus times a minus equal a plus?
Wolfcounsel
08-24-2005, 12:27 AM
"But why does a minus times a minus equal a plus?" --DesertFox
It's only a method of labeling the actual value of the number at a certain point on the number line. If you were at -1000 feet, in your bag would be 1 foot of rope, not minus 1 foot. At -2000 feet, you would have 2 feet of rope, not minus 2 feet. If at the camp, you continue going up and cutting one foot off the rope each 1000 feet, at what point would you have cut off all the rope? At the camp, you would have 45 feet of rope, and zero feet in your bag.
If you prefer the abstract way, I'll post it up tomorrow. Buenas noches!

I think it's just a rule they made up so it would all work. I don't think there IS any "why."
I understand the concept just I really am poor in the explanation department, refers to Wolfie to explain this better than I would ever be able to do.
One thing I have a hard time in math is fractions, addition in fractions is different than multiplication in fractions.
I'm still havin a hard time on that, not to mention geometry, hard to envision math numbers in a spacial way for me for some reason.
That one is a whopper-doozie.

"I think it's just a rule they made up so it would all work. I don't think there IS any "why."" --DesertFox
Okay, never mind the abstract. If you think of the absolute value of any number, it may make it easier to figure out.
Say this problem --> -4 times -2. Okay,
It's like saying you took away 2 apples from a basket 4 times. You cannot say you took -8 apples. It sounds odd. But with the -4 as a helper, you can say you took away 8 apples, absolutely. There are now 8 apples missing in the basket.
Now this one --> -4 times 2.
It is simpler to translate as, you took away 4 apples twice from the basket. The basket is now short (-) 8 apples.
Both ways are just different ways of expressing the same absolute value of the result.
Maybe that explanation rings the bell louder?

"One thing I have a hard time in math is fractions, addition in fractions is different than multiplication in fractions." --Rink
I remember my teacher drilled us in fractions on and on. Practice really does help.
Yea but I forget which fractions to do across and which ones to do crossways.
Multiplying fractions I think you do straight across, but with addition, its different, you cant just go straight across and arrive at the answer
Am I correct?
Correct me if I'm wrong over that.
I keep getting mixed up over that.
Now when it comes to Unit analysis I know how to do the work just fine and dandy, the prob I have is memorizing the freaiking charts from metric to American.
Scientific notation wasnt hard, just a wee bit confusing in some parts.
Now polynomials.... forget it, its difficult, not impossible but very difficult for me to grasp.
I think also in Fractions mixed numbers tend to throw me also.

"Multiplying fractions I think you do straight across, but with addition, its different, you cant just go straight across and arrive at the answer" --Rink
Yep. The simplest way is to multiply the denominators by each other. Then cross multiply the original denominators with the opposing numerators.
EXAMPLE --
3/4 + 1/2 = ?/8 + ?/8
Then, 2 X 3 =6, and 4 X 1 = 4
6/8 + 4/8 =10/8, simplified to 1 and 2/8, reduced to 1 and 1/4

This started out as TT wanting folks to ask him questions because I had posted to him in here not liking some of the things he said. After a few posts, I said that I had no idea where he stood on things, he seemed middle road but inflamatory towards either side of things. So he made an "ask TT Anything" thread. After we got bored with him, WC made a similar thread and it is open season now :) woohoo!!!

"Is it true that in Egyptian heiroglyphics, KENNEDY means "Fat-assed, drunken, illegitimate offspring of Isis and a cockroach"?" --DoctorDoom
The hieroglyph for Shamu shows a basket, water, two vultures, two feathers, and a hand. The double vultures would fit the dough boy's size, and so could the water, and the hand is his non-stop demanding of more taxes, and the basket could be an ancient representation of a roach motel, and the double feathers could be symbols of parenthood. I would take it to mean "son of a cockroach humper free with other people's money who was involved with water". WHEW! That was a difficult one.
After closer scrutiny, I see that the basket represents the leftovers from a huge ancient picnic, and in Shamu's case, it's empty, as would be expected. The feathers are representations of cockroach antennae.

As found in the book "Schrodinger's Kittens and the search for Reality" by John Gribbon, he states that quantam physics tells that, on the quantam level, an atom is impossible. There must be some transfer of energy to keep the electron from collapsing into the atom. They called this third-level particle a 'gluon'. Once we developed an atom-smasher, we recorded the traces left after we destroyed the smasher, and some of the recordings perfectly matched that which we anticipated a gluon would leave. So if you believe quantam physics, gluons do actually exits. Therefore, there are gluons for every atom in your body... so for you to exist, you should have more than 8 gluons in your body.

Type AB blood is the universal acceptor. Type O is the universal donor, and a person with type O blood can only accept type O blood. People with type AB blood do not have antibodies for the other blood types, so this is why people with this type can accept any other type. People with type O blood have no antigens, so this is why it can be accepted by anyone. An antigen is a foreign substance that can elicit an immune response, such as antibody formation. The antibodies then can work on the antigens.

Thank you for the info Trev, and I think I have heard this once before but didn't remember it while passing out giving blood. So then, what is the importance of my rare AB negative blood? To give it I mean...there is no blood type which requires only AB negative right? And those with AB negative can get any blood right?

Dear Mr. WolfCounsel:
I received the following in an e-mail from a desperate member of the family. It was too much for me to handle, so I thought I'd throw the problem at you for your expert, perspicacious analysis.
She wrote:
After years of relentless searching, I finally found the man of my dreams. We plan to be married. However, I do have a problem.
My sister voted for Bill Clinton. My mother has thought for the past 17 years that the CIA has had a transmitter implanted in her brain. She says that she receives messages from Moscow every Tueesday evening. My father had a sex-change operation last year, so now I have two mothers (just like Heather). He changed his name from Horace to Hortense. My older brother is serving time in the state pen for attempted murder, and he bears a striking resemblance to Barbra Streisand. My younger brother sells drugs to 12-year- olds on the playground.
Now back to my problem. I really love this man and I don’t want to lose him. Should I tell him about my sister?

"Doesn't this:
3. Wherefore art thou Romeo, if thou aren't Romeo?
Mean Why are you Romeo?" --Melz
You are correct. Except many people think 'wherefore' means 'where'. Juliet is asking why Romeo is. Now, look at the question in modern English:
Why are you, Romeo, if you are not Romeo? Juliet is the one who asks that, and since she supposes that Romeo is someone else, because two lovers are as one, she is putting herself into Romeo's body, and therefore she knows where she physically is. That is one of those trick Old English queries. Of course 'wherefore' means 'why', just like whence means, 'from where'.

My genotype? All I know is what my parents used to tell me. I'm part Mexican Indian and part Spaniard ( Mestizo, I guess).
Hah, no, your genotype is your allele sequence for a particular trait, genetics. What I mean is that since brown eyes is a dominant trait, you can either be homozygous dominant, which means you have two of the dominant brown eye alleles, one from your mother and one from your father. However, you could also be heterozygous, which means you have one dominant allele, and the recessive blue eye allele. Since the brown eye trait is dominant, the blue eye allele has no affect. Now if one of your parents had blue eyes, you could only be heterozygous, because you would have the dominant allele, which gives you your brown eyes, and the recessive allele, because that is all one of your parents could contribute since one must have two recessive alleles to have blue eyes.

Oh, well, yeah, your genotype is the allele sequence, and your phenotype is the expression of a certain trait based on your genotype. You can have two genotypes for the phenotype of brown eyes, which would be homozygous dominant (BB) or heterozygous (Bb). There is one genotype for the phenotype of blue eyes, which is homozygous recessive (bb).

That kinda jabber is decades, and probably centuries, old in black precincts. It used to be called "doing the nines." The object was entertainment. Two dudes would throw minor insults back and forth to see who could elicit the biggest giggles from the audience. Most of the insults related to the other guy's mama, sometimes stretching to include his pappy. "Yo mama weah combat boots!" "Yeah, well yo mama so fat, she rent out shade space on parade day!" "But yo mama so ugly, the dictionary got her picture alongside the word 'ugly!'" "But yo mama knock kneed AND ugly!" "Oh yeah? Well yo mama so knock kneed, and yo daddy so bowlegged, that when they stand side by side they spell O-X OX!"
There was a recording of this sort of carrying on from the Thirties where they actually used the line above about O-X OX. In the Sixties came a song about "The Woman wit duh Skinny Laigs."
This is a form a black entertainment that began catching on among whites with Sanford and Son. Much of the humor is in the delivery and the ever-so-slight shading of words. Pronunciation is important -- it all gets ruined if pronounced in standard English. In "The Color Purple" you see hints of this style when Danny Glover and his daddy circle each other on the porch like a couple of banty roosters checking each other out to see if one thinks he can whup the other.
This brand of humor is quite unlike any other, sort of black hillbilly, and very much aimed at human vanity and foible. It's as comical as comedy comes when you "get it."

According to Isaac Asimov, where I read about Skewes' number, the first one is 10 to the 10th to the 10th to the 10th, and all that to the 34th. The second one, which depends on the Riemann Hypothesis being correct, is a thousand times the first one.

Could you also explain what the hell pi is exactly? All I know is that it is 3.14 something, and you can use it to find the area of a circle and it is used in an equation to find the magnitude of a magnetic field.
DesertFox
09-04-2005, 02:05 PM
Um, according to Isaac Asimov, Skewes' Number has to do with the formula that predicts how many prime numbers will occur up to some limiting number. Up to Skewes' Number, that formula predicts more primes than there actually are. AFTER Skewes' Number, the formula predicts fewer primes than there actually are. There is another changeover a huge distance beyond that where the prediction is more, then another where it's less, to eternity.
This has allegedly all been demonstrated mathematically, but it's beyond my ken.

Draw a circle with a compass. Place three random points on the circumference. Connect the points with straight lines. Bisect perpendicularly the two lines that are formed. Where the two lines intersect inside the circle is the center. Draw a straight line across the circle connecting the center. Measure the line (diameter). Measure with a map ruler the circumference of the circle. Divide the circumference by the diameter. You will come up with a number close to 3.14 something something something.
DesertFox
09-04-2005, 02:21 PM
Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. As Wolfie says, the circumference is approximately 3 and one-seventh times the diameter.
Geoffrey20005
09-04-2005, 02:48 PM
You can also mathmatically calculate the number pi by finding a perfect circle (not sure the dimensions now, ill look). The circumference of a circle is 2piR (2 time pi times the radius) If you know the circumference, and the radius, divide it by two and the radius, and the number you get will be pi. You can keep dividing this number, and it will continou past the 3.1415...
Wow, so Wolfie and DesertFox... Skewes number is for calculating what? I love things like that...

If you are in relatively good health, do hyperventilation of the body before swimming underwater. Just "huff and puff" for about 30 seconds or longer, if you have time. Then take a deep breath, let a tiny bit out to feel comfortable, and go underwater. You will be surprised how well the body utilizes the oxygen. My father-in-law in the Philippines is almost 75, and he can hold his breath for four minutes.

I know this lady from the Philippines who was taught a different word for butt. The word she was taught was Spanish for the, uh, butt exit. I wonder if she finally learned the correct word.

LOL, I gotta share this story. When I was stationed in Korea I met and start going over to a Bud's house that had married a Korean woman. For about 5 years I called his Mother In Law "Oma" because I thought that meant the same thing as Frau or Senora. It was Joe's son who told me that "Oma" meant Grandma. I always wondered why this sweet little old lady laughed everytime I spoke to her.

She has a good sense of humor, Unk. My wife has some Filipina friends who call me grampa. I think salt and pepper hair is rare for them, until the person is in his late 70's.

Reminds me of when I was younger, first learning French. I tried to tell a girl, "You have entered my heart."
I used the word for butt, instead. No wonder she gave me a strange look.
