Dems Can Make Inroads on Immigration Issue (http://realclearpolitics.com/Commentary/com-8_26_05_FH.html)
By Froma Harrop (%20fharrop@projo.com)

President Bush should know he's not doing us any favors by offering to enforce the nation's immigration laws. It's already his job. Yet that's the deal in his new guest-worker proposal: Keep the cheap labor flowing to business, and maybe I'll start going after employers who hire illegal aliens.

This mindset is making Americans crazy, and Democrats have taken notice. The public sees illegal immigration as its No. 1 international worry, according to a recent survey. Long afraid of the issue, Democrats are beginning to tackle it in a serious and politically potent way.

Two Democratic governors, Arizona's Janet Napolitano and Bill Richardson of New Mexico, have declared states of emergency along their borders with Mexico. New York Sen. Hillary Clinton is not only calling for better border controls, but for enforcing laws that punish people who employ illegal immigrants.

Yes the democrats are using the issue as a springboard for the `06 and `08 elections hoping to attract some conservative voters to the cause. But the conservatives should know that liberals LIE. Besides the repubicans know this is an issue and will have their own 'plan.'

Yes the democrats are using the issue as a springboard for the `06 and `08 elections hoping to attract some conservative voters to the cause.

For the simple reason that Americans are in an uproar over this issue, this could well win them the White House. People have had enough of the "look the other way" attitude about illegal immigration and if someone, ANYONE, says they will do something about it, no matter what party they are, they will bite. So far, only one GOP Congressman has taken a stand against it and that's Congressman Tom Tancredo.

But the conservatives should know that liberals LIE.
Very true but Americans are in an uproar over this and may not care.

Besides the repubicans know this is an issue and will have their own 'plan.'
Like what? Expansion of the Guest Worker Program to thicken the smokescreen? It wouldn't surprise me.

If the republicans can't come up with something other than the 'guest worker' smokescreen, they my be out in the cold.

It would be helpful if someone in DC would research the meaning of "illegal" and respond accordingly.

IAC, we need Mexico's oil and we will kiss Fox's ass to get it.

Re the 2005 YTD imports of crude oil, Mexico was our second largest supplier with 1,568,000 barrels per day, about 16.7% of the total. It's also the second highest source of petroleum, at 1,650,000 barrels per day, 14.4% of the total.

The top five sources in each case are Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Venezuala and Nigeria. Speaking of dealing with devils.

I submit that Washington will bend over and grab ankles to appease the countries listed, inasmuch as our ecowackos have paralyzed our exploitation of domestic resources.
