My son just finished his first week of dual enrollment at our local community college, and BOY have our eyes been opened! The cost of college textbooks is ASTRONOMICAL!

For my son's technical program (Applied Welding Technologies), we have to purchase $250 in gear and materials, PLUS the proffessor recommended a textbook for him to have for a personal resource (so he can study at home for the testing). This particular book ALSO costs $250! I was hoping someone might be able to suggest a place I can find this textbook used or for less money.

"AWS Welding, Volume I" is what it is called. Anybody have any suggestions?

AWS most likely is the American Welding Society (http://www.aws.org/).

From what I can find, the book is AWS WHB-1.9, volume 1 of the 9th edition. If it is, it's available here for $202.

Welding Handbook Volume 1 - Welding Science & Technology (http://www.normas.com/AWS/pages/WHB-1.9.html)

It's available for $203 here.

Welding Science and Technology, Welding Handbook, 9th Ed., Vol. 1 (http://www.techstreet.com/cgi-bin/detail?product_id=1038861)

That's about as cheap as I can find it. Several sites sell it at the full retail of $250+.

WOW -- thanks Doc. I guess a $50 cut is better than nothing. Thank you so much for the links -- I am STILL blown away how you do the things you do. You're simply amazing!

I haven't told Big Bubba about the cost of this book yet -- perhaps I need you to find me a lead shield I can buy before I tell him and he goes nuclear, LOL.

Have you tried ebay.com? Under specialty sites they have a "want it now" area--and it's free to use.

Here are a few that I have found for Used copies...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/0871712814/ref=dp_olp_2//103-4271324-7241456?condition=all

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=544267421&AID=9836638&PID=306185

http://www.powells.com/biblio?&cgi=product&isbn=0871712814

A LOT better then $250, I hope the links work.

And there are not any on Ebay, that I could find, so you don't have to worry about that..LOL

Oh my gosh, unbelieveable! Now I KNOW I am a computer dummy -- I didn't even know where to START looking for this book.

More questions, if y'all will indulge me -- these books are EXTREMELY low priced, how do I determine if I am getting what is being offered? I notice there were some ratings . . . is "good" a decent rating? I don't know what to do . . . have any of y'all ever bought books like this? Is there a hidden catch that I should be looking for? I don't want to waste my money, but if this book can be had for such a reduced price, I really can't afford NOT to get it for my son!

Check the ISBN's they should have given you that with the list of supplies that he needs, so you do not in fact buy the wrong one..LOL

The one at the 2nd link has an ISBN# of 0871712814

ISBN at Powells is also 0871712814 (http://0871712814/)

So they are indeed the same book, and at Amazon if you look at details, the ISBN is indeed 0871712814

So check your list, and if it is indeed that ISBN, then any of those books should be the one...

Look at the sellers ratings on the Amazon site, make sure they have high ratings, and the feedback from buyers.

Powells is always a trustworthy name, but Able, I couldn't tell you, since this is the first I have heard of them.

Homes make sure the edition required for the class is the same as the one you intend to purchase used. For example the one at Powell's for $32.00

Notice it lists the condotion as 'Standard' which is,
Standard Condition
What does 'Standard' condition mean at Powell's? Books in good or better condition, free of writing or other markings in the text (with the possible exception of a previous owner's name in the front). The great majority of the books in our stock fall into this category. In short, when a book is listed as Standard, you can expect it to be a high-quality copy.

I purchased all the books for my Ancient History course used and saved a bundle of $$$.

True--none for sale, but I was referring to the "want it now" specialty site ebay has where you can post what you're looking for to see if any sellers have it.

Yes, I think I am going to arm my son with this information when he heads back to class on Monday, and he can ask the professor to help him nail down exactly what this book is (ISBN # and all that). I would hate like the dickens to purchase one only to find out it's the wrong edition or something like that.

Y'all have been EXTREMELY helpful -- thank you just doesn't seem big enough! FC rocks! Everybody pat yourself on the back for a job well done and appreciated :thumb:

Here's what I found at the AWS website---

A definitive welding text, the Welding Handbook is...

* The oldest and best-known handbook in the industry
* Published by AWS-referenced and used world wide
* Reviewed and evaluated by leading research institutes
* Peer reviewed and approved
* Revised and updated periodically
* Volumes published continuously from 1938 through 2004
* The five volumes of the 9th Edition
1. Welding Science and Technology - ORDER NOW
2. Welding Processes, Part 1 - ORDER NOW
3. Welding Processes, Part 2 - Not Yet Published
4. Materials and Applications, Part 1 - Not Yet Published
5. Materials and Applications, Part 2 - Not Yet Published

Like most handbooks in the industrial arena, this is an ongoing project with periodic revisions. Most likely your son's prof suggested the last revision: Vol. 1, 9th ed., but the 8th ed. might be OK as long as the 9th is in the library where he can get any new stuff for his tests.

I clicked on the "order now" and it came up at $192, but at 932 pages, your son may also want a :blazer: to haul it in.

Yeah, I was showing my son all the links and we were going through them, and he said that they have a library of them in his classroom, and they go over and just pick one off the shelf, but apparently they are all different editions, but not so different that they aren't used in the class. They are NOT allowed to take the books home, but instead may ONLY use them and study from them in the class time -- he's currently taking the first two 2hr block courses in this program. He has 3 tests to take from this textbook before they will allow him to begin his hands-on work. I can't IMAGINE what they are supposed to "know" from this book for these tests! :uhh:

Try bookfinder.com and amazon.com.
Any time I search for a book, DVD or video on Amazon, next to the title it tells you about new and used copies for sale at a lower price. I always choose one of those.
Bookfinder is an awesome used and rare book search. It finds things on Abebooks, Alibris, Amazon, Ebay, Half.com, etc. If you search on bookfinder you won't even need to search Amazon.
I tried searching both sites and found many, from $8 on up.

Ebay is great. Just be sure to check out the feedback. I try to stick with sellers who have a 98% or better rating. If ebay doesn't have an item right now, you can always add the search for the item to your list, and ebay will email you if one is listed. I have bought many, many books on eBay.

Also, when we were in college, we always checked out the local used book stores in town. Many times, they will have textbooks cheap. You might want to check out a local welding shop in case someone there graduated a year or two ago and wants to get rid of his textbook.
