RICHMOND, Va. — Gov. Mark R. Warner has decided not to challenge Republican Sen. George Allen when he runs for re-election next year, the state's Democratic Party chairman said Monday.
Warner is limited to a single term by Virginia's Constitution and the decision frees him to explore a possible presidential bid in 2008.
He declined to speak to reporters Monday about his plans, but Democratic Party Chairman C. Richard Cranwell said the governor will address the issue Tuesday morning during his monthly appearance on WTOP radio in Washington.
"My impression is he wants to finish his term out on a good note," Cranwell said. "Being governor of Virginia is a pretty high honor and pretty serious business and, quite frankly, I respect his decision and think he's got his priorities right."
As he explores his options, the governor formed a federal campaign committee this summer and hired Monica Dixon, a top political adviser to Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign.
Warner had a job-approval rating of 74 percent in a statewide survey conducted last month by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. It was the highest mark for any Virginia governor in the final months of his term in the 20 years the firm has been conducting the poll.
For months, Allen has used the prospect of a Warner challenge to stimulate his fundraising appeals to Republicans determined to keep the seat in GOP hands.
The Democrats have made it clear that they are going to send someone up against us, and Senator Allen will be prepared for a battle," Allen political aide Jason Miller said Monday. http://http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,167638,00.html
