I am at USAFA.
Recently i was talking to someone from the new class who was prior enlisted. She was stationed in England and was professing the benefits of a socialist government. I couldnt believe the lies she had been indoctrinated with. I have confidence that more life experience will show her the way to the truth.

Question: Is this anywhere near common with young airmen? My only experience in the real air force has been a brief three weeks.

Question: Has anyone who has been in the service for a substantial period of time seen a change in political attitudes of O's or E's over time?

Basically, a very young enlistee is going to be pretty much politically naive. I didn't know much about the Real World until little asian people with AK-47's were interrupting a quiet watch on the 50 cal machineguns. I learned pretty quickly, though, as did a majority of the other young adults I served with. I would say we went from "political idiots" to hardcore conservatives pretty quickly, despite leftism "run rampant" back in the US at the time.

I have also seen military experience fail to change one person (just one), so it probably is fairly rare. I had a lib working for me ("just in it for the electronics schooling") who was impervious to change. He wasn't considered reliable, so he wasn't allowed on the Personnel Reliability Program either (tactical nuclear weapons). He didn't change and was a load of headaches and trouble to me the entire time I ran the antisubmarine warfare division.

I don't know if that helps or not, but "he" was a fairly rare instance. That was back in some very tough times for the military, where basically it appeared to "us" that "we in the military" were pretty thoroughly hated and despised. Tough times.

With today's all volunteer, professional military force, I expect mainly a much more conservative, mature enlistee in general, not to mention conservative officer corps. I don't think military service is going to change someone "just in it for the money or training".
