Got mine at $3.09 yesterday. Only cost me a little over $90 to fill the truck up. Good thing it wasn't on empty.
At 3.09, $90 would get me just under 3/4 a tank ($130 if'n it was bone dry)...that mini-van is lookin' better'n'better every day. LOL

Actually, the Honda Fit looks pretty appealing. But if I were to get a second (actually fourth) vehicle, it would have to be used. I can't justify spending more on a new vehicle than I would ever save on gas, and I still need my truck. $2.84 at a couple of places here today.

I hope he's right, too. At least some analysts are predicting gas in the $2.50-range by August. I still think it's possible that gas will get down to the $2.00-range by the end of summer as it did last year.

Wow, I sort of forgot about this thread for a while. Two or three weeks ago it was as high as $2.819 at the lowest-priced stations I could find. Now the lowest priced stations (Wawa and some no-brands) have it for $2.739 or maybe even lower.
For as long as I've owned my truck I've wished it had a bigger tank, like maybe 25 gallons. It's only 19.
I'll have to check out that gas price website that someone else posted. Sounds interesting.

Sam's? What's the point of getting as at Sam's? Sam's is a wholesale club, where you get great prices on stuff, right? I know, cause I'm a member. But the last time I checked, the gas at Sam's was 2¢ per gallon higher than at any Wawa, and Wawas are all over. I know of only one Sam's anywhere.

Sam's and Wal-Mart beat every other station around. What is Wawa?
BarryC
06-19-2007, 04:49 PM
Here Walmarts don't sell gas. Wawa is a convenience store like 7/11. We have more Wawas than any other convenience store. A few years ago Wawa started building larger stores. But then Wawa decided to branch out into gasoline. So then they started building Wawas that sell gas. Now Wawas that sell gas are being built all over. Each one replaces a small Wawa.
Our Sam's has never had the cheapest gas, any time I have driven by it.
Naturalized-Texan
06-19-2007, 05:12 PM
Barry: Wawa sounds like Diamond Shamrock, now Valero, in our area. The Valero stations/convenience stores almost always undersell the majors and are the closest to Wal-Mart in price - sometimes equal, but mostly 1 or 2 cents above Wal-Mart. Our nearest Valero station is close to our nearest Wal-Mart, so it's easy to compare prices. Our nearest Sam's is about 10-12 miles away and the only time I buy gas there is if I happen to need gas when I go there. With Member's discount (5 cents), Sam's almost always beats every other station, but not by enough to make a special trip there just to buy gas.

5 miles up Route 30 from here there is a gas station that was Amoco when we moved to this area in 1985. Sometime later it became a no-brand station. Just last month it became a Valero.
Many Coastal stations have been changing into Sunoco. But many Sunoco stations have been changing into Lukoil. (That is if I'm remembering correctly. It's hard to keep it all straight.)
Right in the middle of Egg Harbor City there is a station that has changed maybe 5 times or more since we moved here in 1985. I think it was an Amoco once. It spent many years, during different times, as an independent station. It was a Getty once. Right now, to tell you the truth, I can't remember what it is. In 1985 there were two Cumberland Farms stores in Egg Harbor City, one of which sold gas. One of them is now a Cedar Market. The one that sold gas became a Coastal and then a Sunoco, I think.
Anyway I'm getting a bit off subject now.
By the way, since my last post the lowest-priced stations have gone down as low as $2.679.

Yeah! The law of supply and demand can seem to be outrageous at times. But that law works every time: when supply is down and demand is up, prices increase. That's why it's called a law. There is nothing we can or should do about it.

The Exxon in town, one of the high-priced majors, is at $2.899. The lowest-priced stations have regular as low as $2.739. The station where I bought gas yesterday had it for $2.779. I was a little disappointed.
I never buy anything other than regular. My best friend, who has been a mechanic all his life, has told me that it's unnecessary to buy anything other than 87 octane regular in most vehicles.
By the way, does anyone know why Sunoco sells so cheap? It's always the lowest, or close to it. They usually match Wawa for low prices, and sometimes even beat them.

Well I'd love to have a newer truck, like maybe early 90s, with the 7.3 Powerstroke in it. Early 90s Fords are very similar to my 87. I got this thing for Powerstrokes. I love the sound, and of course their power. But for some reason the idiots in the fuel companies have priced Diesel fuel through the roof. It's priced at least 40 to 50¢ higher than regular gas now. It's ridiculous. There's something seriously wrong when Diesel fuel is priced so much higher than regular gas.

Yeah, it is called popularity. I can remember when gas was about $1.25 a gallon and diesel was about $.80 a gallon. Of course then the only diesels you really saw were comapny work trucks. Now everybody and their grandma owns one.

My dad was in the Air Force almost 50 years ago. I think it was 1959-61. He was stationed at a base in Germany. In those days the local Germans paid the equivalent of $4 a gallon for gasoline (or was it $5? I always forget). But the Airforce personell on the base paid 12 1/2 cents a gallon.
But I wonder what the price was here at home at that time?
I heard Starbuck Coffee was crappy anyway, but that's just what I heard. I've never tried it myself. I drink the free stuff at work, or I buy it at Wawa when I'm not at work. Wawa does a huge business in daily cups of coffee, here in South Jersey.

Sure electric cars are expensive now, but high tech goods have historically trickled down to the level of affordability. I'm not making any predictions, but there is a finite probability that gas prices will drop somewhat after Memorial day because the refineries will have completed the government-mandated reconstituting into dozens of summer blends. The reconstituting that is taking place now is causing shortages, but after it is completed, supplies of gasoline will probably increase enough to lower prices.

The day after my last post, which was on Wednesday the 16, it went to around $3.239 at most of the lowest-priced stations.
Yesterday I got gas at a Wawa. I was in shock (temporarily) because it was posted everywhere at $3.339 for regular. It was posted on the big electronic digital sign as well as on all of the little black and white signs on top of each pump. But when I actually paid for it, I found that the price was actually $3.239. Why the discrepancy I don't know. Today, it's up to $3.319 at all the lowest-priced stations, 12¢ higher than our post-Katrina record high.
Isn't there something that we make here in the US that we can sell to the rest of the world at ridiculous prices? There's gotta be something.
By the way, Diesel has been hovering around $4± for a couple months now.

Driving in to town today to go see Ben Stein's movie we passed our regular gas station. When we went to the movie, the sign read $3.61/gal, coming home from the movie a couple hours later the sign read $3.63/gal. Yesterday, however, I bought $25 worth for our Tacoma at $3.55/gal.

Expect $4/gallon by mid-summer. Just IMO, but Washington is still taking oil out of circulation to fill the petro reserve.
What's so maddening is that while DOE is obsessed with the long-term prospects of renewables and conservation, it could be easing energy prices right now by just changing its Strategic Petroleum Reserve policy.
The administration refuses to stop withdrawing oil from a tight market to fill the reserve, even though doing so is driving prices higher. Goldman estimates that filling the reserve has raised oil prices by as much as $6 a barrel and 25 cents a gallon at the pump.
The SPR is more than 95% full right now. Freezing new additions until prices fall to about $75 a barrel shouldn't pose an energy security concern.
In fact, Bush could even authorize a release of millions of barrels of oil from the reserve to help ease crude prices. When DOE did it after Katrina, crude prices dropped by $5 a barrel. When the agency did it in late 2000 to alleviate the threat of a home heating oil crisis due to low inventories, prices fell $6 a barrel.Oil Reserve Can Wait (http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=289786799978883)

In Sweden, the cost of gasoline is roughly double what you're paying - a big part of it is taxes of course. So, has anyone figured the actual total percent of taxes in the cost of a gallon? Critisisms of gas prices in Europe often go in that direction. Somebody mentions that taxes are figured as a percent, and the percent hasn't changed while the price has risen - effectively increasing taxes. The state tax advertised at the pump really isn't the total is it?

I saw $3.419 at one of our lowest-priced stations today.
Right near where I work there is a Coastal station that was holding onto a lower price for at least 2 days longer than all the Wawas and Sunocos. But they finally raised it the same as them. I will be driving past it tomorrow morning.
By the way, on all the rest stops on the Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike and the Atlantic City Expressway, the gas stations are only allowed to raise their prices once a week. So by the end of each week they have lower prices than the all the other stations. This is causing major traffic jams on these highways, miles of backups.

Deisel just went up to $4.21. I filled up this morning for 4.17, 6 hours ago. That was at the Pilot truck stop on I-10 in Orange, TX. A lot of the truckers are sitting with their engines shut down to save fuel.
Filled up today. Only buy gas once or twice a year. $3.83 is the cheapest I could find.

I just dug out one of my record books (I log every gas purchase, and have done so since I started driving). Between November 2001 and February 2002 I paid less than $1 per gallon for regular gas (as low as $.919). Previous to that it was a little above $1 per gallon.
Today I believe I saw $3.599 at a Coastal, one of the lowest-priced stations.

Actually, I bought (well, my employer did) diesel twice yesterday at the same station. In the morning it was 4.45, and in the afternoon it jumped to 4.53. Nothing like raising the price on fuel already in the ground! $378 and change in the morning and $275 later on. I figured my mileage and I was averaging, hold on to your socks, 5.16 miles per gallon.......

During the winter of 1986/87 I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. My best friend and I thought it would be a cool place to live. We didn't even last a year. I lasted 6 months or so. Anyway, at the time I had a 1975 Cadillac Sedan deVille, with the 500 CID V8. It got around 9 mpg all the time, usually. But for a short time I delivered pizza with it. During that time I had to buy 25 gallons of gas every 125 miles! That's 5 mpg. That sucked big time. I think gas was around $.999 at the time, but I don't have my log book in front of me to check that.

You know there is another interesting aspect to this. We have stations here in WV that are still using the old roll style numbers which only go up to 3.99. So they will either have to take a loss on the cost or pay 600 dollars or more a pump to upgrade.

We have to get gas today, and when I went by our two stations here in my little town they are both at $4.01/gal for reg unleaded. We have gotten so low on gas, we can't make it into Gatorville, but it's the same price at the station there we usually get gas so it won't make much difference. :(
UPDATE: Well, we went to the station here in my little town and it's up to $4.05 ... BUT ... they were completely out of regular gasoline, only premium left. No WAY were we going to pay $4.35, so we went on to the station we usually go to in Gatorville (praying we wouldn't run out of gas before we got there). Ended up paying $4.03/gal for regular. It was as high as $4.09/reg-gal in Gatorville proper. :(
It's almost $5 a gal. here for the cheap stuff.

All the lowest-priced stations that I ever see were holding at $3.859 for a while (I'd swear that some of them went as high as $3.899 though). But now some have gone down. Many are at $3.839, and there might be some lower than that.
But when our lowest prices start getting higher than in some other states, I know there's something wrong. Normally we are just about the lowest in the nation. Some parts of Texas are as low as we are, but that's about it, I think.
