In 2006 Nancy Pelosi promised the American people that if they would elect a Democrat Congress, they would lower gas prices. The American people did elect a Democrat Congress. When the Dems took over Congress in January 2007, the price of a gallon of gas was $2.32. 'Nuf said.

Amen to that, Tex...

Gas is down to $3.599 today...

Could you imagine how much less a barrel of oil (and therefore, a gallon of gas) would be if Congress would lift THEIR offshore drilling ban?? PRESIDENT Bush (for those in the DBM) announced the Executive ban was lifted...what...3-4 weeks ago? On the Monday he made the announcement, oil was $148/barrel. It is now $115 (22.3% drop). If the same happened after Congress lifted their ban, in 3-4 more weeks, oil would be under $90/barrel.

But, the farkin' liberals - claiming they want to do what's best for the country - decide to take a 5 week vacation. PoS need to be hung from a gallows on prime time...:flame:

I paid $3.559 in the Woodstown area of Salem County, on Friday. Up here in Atlantic County the cheapest is in the low $3.60s.
But from reading the last page of this thread, it looks as though NJ no longer has the cheapest gas!

I remember paying 19 cents a gallon back in the early 1950s.

No, it's not. I live in one of the highest gas price areas in the country and I still remember the day it was $1.00 exactly at the most expensive station in town (in early 2001). My buddy in Georgia said gas was $0.41 a gallon where he lives in Alpharetta. This wasn't long ago...

I remember paying 19 cents a gallon back in the early 1950s.I remember 26 cents a gallon. I used to fill up my minibike for about 18 cents. Of course back then 18 cents was a lot of money for a little kid with no income.

The last time I paid less than a dollar for regular was between November 2001 and February 2002. It was as low as $.919. Previous to that it was a little above $1 per gallon.

But it would be interesting to dig out my record books from the early 80s and see what I was paying. I can't remember.

I do have a memory of seeing $.569 on a gas pump while riding in my parents car, just before the so-called oil crisis, and a year or two before I got my permit. The car at the time was a 1975 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon. My parents got rid of the car less than a year before I started driving, I believe. I was disappointed.

Still $3.85/gal around here. Of course, down where my Mom lives (an hour away from me), THEY have no extra gas taxes (unlike MY county), and someone called in to the radio station I listen to (they have a segment where people call in with locations for cheap gas) and reported $3.55/gal at one of the stations down there. :(

Okay I just checked the USA national gas temperature map http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_gastemperaturemap.aspx
and found a large section of South Jersey, northwest of here, with prices ranging from $3.399 to $3.499 at dozens and dozens of stations. Cool.
Edit: I see that one of those stations has Diesel for $3.999.

On our way from Texas to MD, we drove about 1,500 miles and got 32.5 mpg on our 2007 HHR. The cheapest gas we bought was $3.399 in Texas and Tennessee, but we saw gas advertised as low as $3.329 in Virginia and Diesel as low as $3.899 also in VA.

Since I've been out of work on disability, I haven't driven much. But I just drove by the gas station I mentioned earlier, and the price of regular was down to $3.299 (or possibly $3.289).

I find it very strange to see Exxon with low prices, but they've got 'em. Ever since that unbelievable record high profit, Exxon's had low prices, right down with the rest of them here (though I didn't notice their price today).

BarryC
09-14-2008, 09:24 AM
This is absolutely an outrage. There's no call for this whatsoever. As of Friday, almost all of the lowest-priced stations around here were down to $3.149. I thought it was great. Not cheap, but great that it was finally going down substantially. Today I drove past most of those same stations, on my way home from work, and every last one of them was at $3.399 for regular, every single one. It's outrageous. There's no call for that.
We've been having hurricanes hitting this country, from the coast of Texas, all the way around to the east coast, for hundreds of years, yet gas prices were never raised after a hurricane, not until Katrina. Now they raise the prices for every excuse they can think of. It's not fair, not fair at all.
So what exactly would happen to the oil companies and to the speculaters if they left the prices right where they were 2 days ago, instead of raising them by 25¢ a gallon? This is totally wrong. There is something seriously wrong in this country when gas prices go up by 25¢ a gallon without OPEC being involved. Shepard Smith said a couple days ago that the prices could actually double or triple after this hurricane. That's just criminal.
Sorry for my rant.

They're rationing in the western part of NC, west of Winston Salem along I-40 to west of Asheville. We drove to Tennessee this weekend for a TaiKwonDo tournament (both kids are black belts) and we had to sit in line in Hickory for 2 hours to get 10 gallons of gas...thankfully that got us to Gatlinburg, and they are fine. Gas there is around 3.60 per gallon.

Gas in Raleigh is still between 3.85 to 3.99.

Do you mean the station itself is rationing, or is the local government rationing?

"Rationing" probably wasn't the correct term; they were just out. Before we left I pulled up the online Asheville paper and they (the city) were rationing...telling city employees to work alternate days or just stay home if possible.

The gas station owner felt that it would clear up this week. They were getting deliveries, but it's going to take a few days before supply gets back to equal demand. Until that happened this particular station was only allowing 10 gallons per customer...and we had to go into Hickory a ways before we found anyone who had any gas.

Per Oil-Price.net (http://www.oil-price.net/), as of 10:33, crude was $98.28. Darn those speculators! On the newgative side, dropping oil prices reduce gas prices and thereby eases the preessure to drill here and drill now. The false sense of security can be dangerous in the long haul.

For our oil folks, are the plans being made to open up promising oil fields now that the congressional ban has expired?

By the way, I forgot to tell you. A couple of weekends ago when I was over in Oklahoma visiting my sister-in-law, it was $1.99 in Kingston. A little over #2.00 in Madill, and $2.20 or so in Ardmore, which is on I-35 --OKC to Dallas, and always higher on the interstates.

I thought $1.99 was amazing, but there's always a gas war on in Kingston. The population of that little town might be 1,000, and for whatever reason, it's the cheapest gas in the state most of the time.

$2.499....if this keeps up, this winter may not be so bad. Diesel is down to $3.439. That's over a dollar less than this time last year (if I remember correctly). That means heating costs should go down this year.

A little aside: On our 4,000 mile trip to MD & PA in late August and early September we got 32.3 mpg on our 2007 Chevy HHR. Last Saturday we drove to the Texas Renaissance Festival, a 200-mile round trip passing through Houston, and got 32.9 mpg.

Right now almost all stations have regular for $2.439, even Exxon. There's one station that may be cheaper by a penny or two. I won't need gas till next weekend, if I'm estimating correctly. So who knows how low it will get. And there are other parts of NJ that are cheaper than here. But you guys in Texas and OK really have it going on there. Wow.
Gas is cheap but I just had to pay for new belts and an alternator in my pickup. The altnernator was an original, 21 years old. Not bad at all.

$1.88 here in southern Indiana.

I don't like it, really. I'd have preferred prices stabilized somewhere around $2.25 to $2.50 a gallon. Considering inflation over the opast 30 years that's a reasonably fair price. People can still enjoy their normal sized vehicles while others can continue to tell themselves they are doing good driving their econo boxes and the oil companies can pile up profits while claiming to not be stiffing anyone while OPEC stays fairly silent. Moderation, where everyone is reasonably satisfied.

Dropping like this makes me twitch. It's going to cause someone to bolt and prices to spike again if we're not careful. Of course, that assumes Obastard doesn't step in and screw it all up by federal dictat anyway.

Went to Georgia this weekend: bought gas just over the Florida-Georgia line and paid $2.17. Drove for another hour northward, and saw gas for $1.98. While in Warner Robins, we paid $2.01 on Saturday. Driving back from Georgia on Sunday, we stopped after Americus and paid $1.97. When we got back to our home town, the price was $2.39.

That American flag picture was probably from the mid 1990s.
I know in 1994 you could buy gas for $.919 here in Jersey. I remember because there was a big family trip that year. So the picture was taken a couple years after that, I'd guess.
Today the cheapest gas near here or near where I work is $2.119

My energy bill came today and I just about cried!! We're on a 'budget' with the local utility. They average your past 12 months usage and adjust your payment every quarter based upon the past 12 months. For the last quarter we were paying $234/month for gas & electric. This next month it DROPPED to $140/month!!! What a HUGE relief!!

What I fail to understand is why everyone refuses to call out one of the primary factors of what lead to this economic mess we are in.

Gasoline.

At one point, just months ago, Oil was $147/barrel, gasoline was $4.45/gallon. Now that the damage is done, oil has collapsed to $56/barrel and gasoline is heading below $2.00/gallon, but no one will admit that the cost of fuel played a major role in the collapse we are seeing now. Politicians, news media, everyone is silent.

FUBAR if you ask me.
