When i came back through town it was $3.25~ What is really strange is we live next to an Indian reservation, The Seneca's and even with out taxes, their prices are now the same as off res' gas stations~ They are usualy 20 cents a gallon cheaper. whats up with that~?

It's pretty bad in my little slice of Florida -- I left this morning to search out supplies and so forth for my friend who lost everything in the hurricane. The gas station that is the cheapest here, Kangaroo, was selling regular for $2.65 when I went by around 9am. This afternoon on my way back from town, the SAME station HAD NO GAS. All the stations around, had not gas. Signs had been changed, and had been left at the last known price before the pumps ran dry -- $2.89 for regular. They didn't bother to change the signs because there WAS no gas.
We had to leave to go back out because of my nephew's birthday party (which should have been cancelled so we didn't have to DRIVE, but that's a different story). I HAD to get gas, we actually DID get it at one of the last $2.89 stations in Gainesville (we paid $37.16 for only 13 gallons) , but it already had bags on some of the pumps indicating they were running out of gas.
On the talk radio station I listen to, the DJ's were urging people not to panic, but my son said that when he was leaving work, at all the stations along his route home were people lined up with cars, boats, ATV's filling up with gasoline, so it was no wonder there was little to no gas when we came back through this evening. My husband drives through 50 red lights on his way to work (one way!), about 40 miles. If gas continues to climb in price, I simply don't know what we are going to do. http://www.freeconservatives.com/vb/images/icons/icon9.gif

$2.59 on base. 10 gal/person limit.
I didn't pay for it today, i paid for it 2 days ago at 2.49 because that was the day crude oil went above $70 per gallon. Apparently the gas stations took an entire 8 hours to raise prices after that. 8 whole hours!! Of course, we should assume that consumption went up that much in 8 hours and also productivity went down as well in 8 hours. That is not the case, but the threat of that happening soon is good enough for these folks!
still $3.19 here. I will run out of gas on Saturday. You can bet it will not be down, but it will be up. Labor day weekend is also a reason to price gouge !!!

I paid US$2.99-9/10 per gallon for regular unleaded yesterday. What's interesting is that California could--ironically!!--end up with the cheapest gasoline in the USA because all the refineries in the state are back up again and California gets most of its crude oil for its refineries from Alaska and California's own oilfields. California refineries do get oil from a few other places but only in relatively small amounts due to the enormous transportation costs of shipping the oil by tanker to California (people forget running tanker ships for long distances costs big money).

Not necessarily. Station owners must base their prices at least partially on replacement costs, not on the price they paid for the gas. If they didn't do that, they wouldn't be able to purchase gas to replace what they are selling. Remember, the average wholesale price of gasoline is nearly $2.50 per gallon, so when the station owner tacks on the taxes, overhead, and some profit, it's easy to see how gas could be in the $3.00 range.

I'm in Atlantic County. I'm about a half hour drive inland from Atlantic City.
I believe it was aproximately 3 years ago that the price dipped below 90 cents for regular at our lowest priced stations.
In this township we have a gas station on the highway. It and all the stations in Hammonton, further West, were always the cheapest. In more recent years we got a Wawa a little east of here which is now priced similarly to those stations. Now the no-brand station in Egg Harbor City, 2 miles east of here, is usually priced similarly to the Wawas. But once in a while the Exxon that is catty-cornered from it is cheap too.
I'm afraid to see what the prices are at now. My tank is nearly full. I won't need gas till the middle of next week.

Holy mackeral! $3.459!! I just saw this 5 minutes ago at the Exxon in town. I'm in shock. Of course the Wawa could be lower, even a lot lower, but it's too far away to go look. Last Wednesday or so I got gas at the Wawa. I'm pretty sure it was $2.499.
Are they out of their freakin' minds? How can they do that? I don't care about crude oil futures and all that. Raising the price a whole dollar when it was already high to begin with is just plain wrong. It's immoral.
How do they expect people to afford heat in their houses this coming winter, or even to afford to go back and forth to work? This is just outrageous.
I was just reading in a news article about how gas prices should go down, and they mentioned prices in and near New York City. Those prices are below $3.00. Unreal. Here's the article:

It averages $2.75 for regular in my area. Will the liberalosers thank Bush for the drop? They went multi-orgasmic blaming him for the increase.
It has been 2.55 here since Friday (before that it was around 2.64). There is some liberal creature on a forum I watch but cannot participate in any longer (typing to some of these people doesn't work and my only next resort would be an outlet I cannot persue) who has been arguing to the point of 100 posts or better that the gas companies are sticking it to the poor folks by raising prices on Fridays which are paydays. For over 100 posts, conservatives who notice this as a lie in our area, have argued that the price has gone down 3 out of 4 Fridays. She keeps pointing out how the weekend was even lower in price by 2 cents.
It has taken this stupid chick over 100 posts and she still hasn't realized that you have to consider the price BEFORE Friday to claim that the price went up. NOT the price AFTER Friday. LOL. I keep hoping she will see the light and stop responding.

I saw $1.99 today!! It was like seeing a glimps of heaven!! Ain't it sad we think that's cheap?
I thought all "regular" was 87. Usually that is what I am putting in my tank. 89 is always medium. Hmmm. The owners manual just says "regular unleaded" and doesn't give an octane (haha I have no idea what octane really means besides those numbers).
I do hope to know if I am not getting a good deal. Usually it is 10 cents more expensive between 87 and 89. And then 10 mor cents to get to 91 (I think that is the next level).

As far as I know, Regular means 87 octane almost anywhere. But Sunoco sells (or used to sell) 86. But they had about 5 or 6 grades of gas. But around here Sunoco no longer exists. Most of them were converted to Coastals I think, and some to a new company I never heard of called Lukoil.
I've been buying 87 for many years now. I gave up on 89 or higher.
By the way, some stations' premium is 91, while other's is 93 or 94. But I never buy the stuff anyway.
And our Wawa is now selling regular for $1.979, and, as usual, the no-brand station next door to it is a penny lower.
Barry
P.S. One more thing- I keep wondering why we continue to use the word unleaded, when all gas is unleaded now. You cannot buy gas with lead in it anymore. That went out with the advent of the catalytic converter.

Well after a brief hiatus from these forums, I'm back. Last time I posted about gas prices they had been dropping by a cent or two per day.
I had thought they were going to level off where they were for a while. But suddenly they went up 6 cents over night. Then another 6 cents. Then more after that, and I couldn't keep track.
Two or three weeks ago prices were holding at $2.189 at the cheapest stations. But then suddenly I was able to find gas for $2.139 or lower.
Yesterday the lowest price I saw was $1.969, 2 cents lower than the day before. I believe it's dropping a cent or two a day now. We'll see, but it's looking good.

The Dimmies had previously tried to use the "high gas prices" as an issue to power their Bash Bush Bandwagon. Not surprisingly, not once did any of the Democrat leaders in Congress point out that government taxes account for about 50 cents on the gallon of the "high cost of gasoline".....
And, needless to say, not one single Democrat proposed the obvious solution to the "high gas price problem" - cut or eliminate those taxes.
The Democrat Party is all problems, no solutions.

But to tell you the truth, I can't remember what I was paying when I started driving regularly, on my own. That was `82 or `83. But I did keep records, and have the little books around somewhere.
Anyway, when gas was in the mid 50s per gallon in the mid 70s, what was the total tax on it back then? Does anyone know?

Well now it's getting ridiculous. It was going down, and down, and down. I was feeling realy good about gas prices. I thought we might possibly see the $1.60s or even the $1.50s. I guess it was just wishful thinking. A couple weeks ago I said it was down to $1.919 I think. Well it has started skyrocketing again. I got gas on Saturday or Sunday for $2.089. I think that's about as low as you can get right now.
Before they used Katrina as an excuse, but it hasn't gotten down to the pre-Katrina prices, if I remember correctly. So what's their excuse now? All these price games they are playing should be illegal.
It reminds me of the price of postage over the years (and decades). It was 3 cents from the mid 1930s all the way up to around 1958. Then it was 4 cents for another 10 years or so. Then 5, then 6, then 8 cents and so on.
Now it goes up every 2 or 3 years or so. I think the only difference between what they are doing with gas prices and what they are doing with postage prices, is that once postage has gone up, it doesn't go back down again.
But if postage was able to stay the same for 20 years or more, and then only go up by 1 penny, why did all that change to the way it is now? And why is gas the same way (only worse)?
It's all baffling. And it's wrong to put consumers through that.
Oh, sorry for my rant. I forgot myself.
By the way, the only reason I know about postage is because I've been collecting stamps for over 30 years.

Pre-Katrina the price was around $2.159.
Looks like the prices have dropped, now that the Katrina-caused oil disruptions have been (partially) corrected.
BTW, another factor at play here is that power plants have had to shift from burning coal (the biggest source of electrical power in our country) to burning natural gas and oil. And those two fuels, of course, we should reserve for our vehicles, and not waste them on producing electricity. But the Libs/Democrats generally obstruct the construction of new coal-fired power plants, even though our country has hundreds of year's worth of coal reserves.
Thanks again, Democrats. You keep doing your part to keep energy costs as high as possible for the American Worker!
Why the shift from coal to those other two fuels, you ask? Simple - the union-controlled, non-competitive rail lines have fallen into disrepair, so Wyoming coal suppliers were not able to meet their contracts to deliver coal towards the east. Democrat Party = pro-union.
Thanks again, Democrats.
The good news is, some of the needed rail line repairs have now been performed, so coal shipments are on the rise again.
The bad news is, the Democrat Party still opposes the much-needed construction of new coal and nuke power plants.

I don't know what the oil companies are up to, but it can't be legal. There's no way you can jack up the price by 70 or 80 cents a gallon in just a month or two. There's no way.
I think when the prices were at their highest after Katrina, the Exxon was at $3.459, but the cheapest stations were a lot less than that. I'm not sure what the Exxon is at right now. I forgot to take notice.
What really gets me is how they play games with us. They raise it to ridiculous levels, then lower it. Just when we think it's half decent, they raise it all over again. I think a month or so ago it was at $1.809 or something. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is getting very old!

This thread hasn't been posted to in a long time. I figured I'd bring it back, now that gas prices are dropping so much.
How low is it (regular) where you are?
This past Sunday I paid $2.279 at the Wawa near here. That was the lowest I could find. Less than an hour later I was down in Cumberland County, and the Wawa there had it for $2.139! A Coastal near there also had it for that price.
Yesterday I drove past a Wawa near my work that had it for $2.139, but then I drove by the Wawa near here and it had it for $2.099. Both of these Wawas are on the same highway. Meanwhile there are 2 small no-brand stations that had it for a penny less.

Well it seems to have stopped dropping, and has levelled off at $1.939 for the lowest around.
I've been recording the total gallons, total price, and price per gallon at every fill-up since I started driving, although I can't find all the books right now. Last November it had dipped down to $1.889. So we didn't quite reach that.

Paid $.01 to fill the tank last week - no I'm not kidding. Best45Cal used his Safeway Club Card - I used my Giant Eagle card at Getgo; from buying groceries at Giant Eagles using their discount card, I accumulate discounts on gas for every $50 spent. So at $1.99 a gallon at Getgo combined with having saved up to a $2.00 a gallon discount, gas was CHEAP! They have to charge something - by their rules they can't end up owing you, heh.

Well 2 days after I last posted, it started dropping again, a tiny bit at a time. Now the lowest I can find anywhere around here, at least in this county, is $1.909.
But I believe it was only 3 to 4 years ago when it was just below 90 cents. I'll have to check my gas books again.
It would be interesting to check my gas books from when I first started driving, which was sometime around 1980 or so. I can't remember what the prices were. But I remember gas pumps showing $.569 around 1975 or so, a few years before I started driving. Then they skyrocketed overnight, to well over a dollar, during that so-called gas crunch.

Interesting piece of trivia- New Jersey is one of only two states that do not allow self-service gas. I think the other is Maine. When I go out of state, I find it very odd to be able to pump my own gas. I get uncomfortable because I feel like I might screw up and not know how to turn on the pump or something.
That reminds me of story where something relatively bad happened to me. I went to a general store one time to get gas, back in the mid to late 80s. They allowed you to pump your own gas, even though of course it's illegal. I pulled my car up to the pumps. As soon as the people inside saw me gab ahold of the gas nozel, they threw the switch inside. Unfortunately the last person to use the nozel didn't release the trigger lock, so when they threw the switch, gas went came out and went all over my car and the ground. What a horrible mess.

As of yesterday October 20 the lowest price around here is at a Sunoco in town that has regular for $1.899, a penny or two below the Wawa and the no-brand guy in town.
Okay so Oregon is the other state that does not allow self-service. I couldn't remember. I've always lived here, so it's perfectly normal to me.

Oh no! I just posted about a station selling at $1.899. Well today I drove by the Wawa where I usually buy my gas and the price was at $1.959, up 4 cents. I hope that doesn't mean that prices are on their way up again. What a bummer that would be.

It's still a good station, but I still think the price was an error. Regular was over $2.00, and premium was $1.47. The price was lower for premium on the same pump as the regular. $2.47 for the premium would have made more sense.

And the plot thickens...
As of now, a couple days later than my last post, the Sunocos and Coastals are still at $1.899, while the nearest Wawa is at $1.959, the same price as the Exxon in town, which doesn't make any sense.

The lowest I can find in this immediate area is $1.899 at Wawa and at the no-brand station in town. A week ago that Wawa was selling it for $1.919.
But a week ago I got gas at an Atlantic Fuel in Pleasantville, about 13-15 miles from here, for $1.889. So they are probably 2 or 3 cents lower than that by now, over there. Atlantic Fuel seems to always stay a penny under the Wawa.
A while ago, maybe in December, the lowest I could find was in the $1,90s, but then it suddenly went up into the low $2.10s , but then a couple weeks ago it started plummeting. We have finally come down to the November 2005 low.
I like it. But I really don't understand why they have to keep playing games with the prices.

Hey Foxie, I was in Phoenix about 3 years ago when that pipeline broke and caused the prices in AZ to jump higher than they are now in CA.
AZ had some HIGH ASS prices back then, too. This one place in Phoenix was charging $4/gal.
People were following the gas trucks from wherever they came from to the gas stations. I found some relatively "inexpensive" gas on Chandler Blvd at Coronado (in Chandler). I had to wait about 30 minutes, but it was worth it.
Napolatano enacted some kind of price gouging law after that.

It was skyrocketing for a while, going up 2 or 3 cents a day or more. But it's been holding at $2.359 for two weeks now, at all of the Wawas that I have seen. What's strange is, Wawas normally vary in price from place to place but right now all of them have the same price. That's very odd. There is one no-brand station near here that has it at $2.349. That's as low as I can find. So it's gone up 50 cents a gallon since December. Ridiculous!
