Tiffany &amp; Co. said Wednesday its profit rose 7.9 percent in the latest quarter, thanks to a solid increase in sales.

The upscale specialty retailer reported net income of $89.3 million, or 60 cents a share, for the fiscal fourth quarter ended Jan. 31, up from net of $82.7 million, or 55 cents a share, in the prior fourth quarter.

The previous year's figure included an investment-related impairment charge of 3 cents a share.

Sales grew 9.4 percent to $619 million from $565.8 million in the prior fourth quarter. The fourth-quarter earnings topped Wall Street's consensus estimate of 59 cents a share, which was based on a Thomson First Call poll of 14 analysts. Likewise, sales topped the $612.1 million First Call estimate.

While all of the sales growth was due to openings of new stores, Tiffany's growth is a good sign of a recovering economy.
