</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Russell Ahr, spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, confirmed the agency was looking into the incident and said questioning of Carrasco-Calderon would begin after local authorities charged him.

The rolling gunbattle between suspected illegal immigrants and immigrant smugglers in separate vehicles near 64th Street and Thomas Roads is the latest example of the smuggling-linked violence the federal immigration agency has been trying to reduce in the last two years.

"We were able to look at the vehicles involved and we did find bullet holes in both vehicles," said Scottsdale police spokesman Sgt. Mark Clark.

Police were called about 11:15 p.m. Monday about a possible road-rage incident.

Police said a 1993 Saturn and a 1990s model Ford pickup speeding north on 64th Street toward Indian School Road — and exchanging gunfire — could not stop at a dead end at the Arizona Canal. Both vehicles flew into the water, and neighbors helped rescue the occupants.
