How do you guys get the cool boxes in your responses? I think they are great when Oracle wants to slam me on what I say, it is easily discernable from his response.

Ponch you have to hit reply with quotes. Please post board questions in the Techi forum from now on. Thanks

As an alternative, cut and paste the text to be quoted and insert it between the UBB quote codes. From the FAQ:

[ quote] text [ /quote] = Surrounds the given text with blockquote and hr's. This UBBCode tag is used for quoting a reply.

Removing the spaces after the two left brackets:

[ QUOTE ]
text

[/ QUOTE ]

This is preferable to copying several hundred (or thousand) words and then picking through them for the desired text.

This is just doing manually what the software does automatically whenever you click the "Quote" button. You can also use a combination of these two methods to address several ponts in a post one at a time. For instance, if I clicked "Quote" on the first post in this thread, the code would look like this:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>ponch21 said:

Oracle wants to slam me on what I say, it is easily discernable from his response. </pre><hr />

.....which gives this block displayed in the response:

However, if I wanted to address each sentence separately, I could break them out into two quote boxes using the code that Doc mentioned. To do that, I would just need to use the ubb codes (tags) between "....responses?" and "I think...", like this:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>ponch21 said:

Response 1.

I think they are great when Oracle wants to slam me on what I say, it is easily
discernable from his response.
Response 2.</pre><hr />

........which displays like this:

You may notice that I never add an extra second carriage return after the [ /quote] tag, but the extra space still shows up on the post. That's because the software automatically provides one carriage return to create that empty space (an extra line) after a quote.

Clear as mud?

Agreed. But, if any feature has ever been abused on BBs, it's that Quote button. I have seen (NOT at FC, thank human) an entire post covering three screen pages duplicated with the two-word response, "I agree!" followed by a copy of THAT post with an added, "Me too!"

It's a lazy-button and invites abuse, especially amongst newbies. Cutting and pasting at least requires thought on the part of the one doing the quoting.

However, a line return is needed BEFORE the quote to put a space on top of the box.

I.e., this line precedes the quote.

[ quote]Ths line is the quote.[ /quote]
This line after the quote would be spaced as Rhino noted.

I have found a problem with the reply with quotes in this software. It doesn't happen all the time but I've had it happen twice. The carriage return doesn't work and you end up with no space between the quote box and my post. Makes it kind of hard to read. Has anyone else ever had this happen? It's not my keyboard either.

Heh, heh, heh! Couldn't resist!

We usually pare down the unecessarily excessive quotes like you mentioned, and also ask the poster to be more considerate in the future. It seems to work pretty good, because that seems to happen a lot less here than it used to.

I don't recall that happening to me, but I'm not exactly a frequent poster here anymore.

One possibility is that there a hidden ASCII code embedded inside the quote tag, either through UBB (most likely) or the typist accidentally hitting that code (less likely). I know once in awhile I will hit an Alt-key or Ctrl-key combination by mistake.

Of course with how badly I type, it is a miracle that I do not do that every other sentence.
