NBA Will Be Sporting New Threads
Wednesday, October 19, 2005; E03
<NITF>Orlando Magic forward Grant Hill thinks NBA Commissioner David Stern went too far with the minimum dress code the league plans to enforce beginning Nov. 1. Is it because he has to wear shirts with collars instead of throwback jerseys? Nah, that's cool. Is it having to wear dress slacks or khakis instead of sweat pants? Nah, that's okay, too. The problem is that Hill has no idea how to accessorize now.
"I got to get rid of my 'do-rags now," Hill said yesterday, shaking his head. "I had an assortment of 'em, different colors to match my outfits."
Hill was speaking in jest. But the league is no longer kidding around with players who have extended the limits of casual dress in recent years.

I have mixed feelings on this. I do think that these professional athletes should travel in a suit and tie or at least a good polo shirt and slacks. The suit with the ball cap on sideways and sunglasses (Paul Pierce of the Celtics) or those who wear more chains and medallions than Mr. T. (Allen Iverson of the Sixers) are what we don't need.
I do think David Stern is taking it a bit far. What's wrong with decent sweatshirt for a post game interview? You know, nothing torn up or distasteful?
Dress codes are more of a control tool than anything. Take George Steinbrenner of the New York Yankees and his dress code. All of his players are to be clean shaven and a haircut. I personally like the Randy Johnson of old with the shoulder length mullet and the goatee. It made him look so menacing.

NBA? Oh, that thing black people do. People still watch that?
Obviously, making millionaires wear shirts with collars be racist. Might as well be chains. [/sarcasm]
"I got to get rid of my 'do-rags now,"
Key Words in that whole phrase is RAGS!
get Rid of those do-RAGS and start dressing respectfully and maybe, just MAYBE they can get rid of the gangsta atmosphere and problems in the NBA
One can wish yea?

Well ... he is the MORON that made it racist ....

The players should dress like men instead of a bunch of wanna be gangstas. The coach dresses up, so why can't the players?

You can put a bowtie on a pig but it is still a pig. You can put these thugs in suits but they are still thugs.

I guess the complainer's sense of identity and self-worth comes from looking like a pimp.

. :soap:Speakin of Iverson...grrr That kid should have been in jail...years ago..around the early 90s when he was either just in HS or just out...back home...near the projects we were living in at the time...Iverson was involved in this big stupid racial riot at a local bowlin alley. Apparently a couple of fellas went into this bowlin alley, and a couple of redneck types made some comments...so these fellas left the bowlin alley and came back with a bunch of buddies and started this huge hooha, throwing chairs around etc and beating up the rednecks....Iverson (among others) was arrested but because he was being looked at by some NBA scouts or some such nonsense...our then Governor Doug Wilder(because Chuck Robb became a senator) pardoned him...and you see how given a second chance he's just become such an upstanding citizen. Anyway...I can't stand the punk. He's a thug, not a rolemodel. I'd just as soon see him dressed like he does, so you at least know what you are dealing with when you see him.:djd:

Speakin of Iverson...grrr That kid should have been in jail...years ago Oh I agree. John Thompson bailed him out of trouble alot in Georgetown and he obviously hasn't changed.

What gets me is at LeBron James grew up in less than ideal circumstances, never set foot in college, went from high school right into the NBA, and showed more maturity on Day One as a pro player than Iverson, Rodman, Sprewell, and a lot of other players have shown in their entire careers combined.

Right...it boils down to personal responsibility, not poverty level... how folks are raised, what values they carry with them...and IF they have any kind of respect for themselves, and those they represent, they wouldn't need someone fixing their mistakes, or setting dress code standards for them, because they would hold themselves to a higher standard without being told.
If someone gets paid as much as NBA players do, it isn't unreasonable to ask him to dress professionally. FYI and for perspective, here is the NBA minimum wage scale.
