BEVERLY HILLS – The frisky musical "Chicago," adapted from the stage hit about two murderous women competing for tabloid celebrity, led Academy Award contenders today with 13 nominations, among them Best Picture and four acting honors.
Other Best Picture nominees for the 75th annual Oscars were the 1860s vengeance epic "Gangs of New York"; the Virginia Woolf-related drama "The Hours"; the fantasy adventure "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"; and the Holocaust saga "The Pianist."
Besides Best Picture, "Chicago" scored nominations for lead actress Renee Zellweger, supporting actresses Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones and supporting actor John C. Reilly.
