Carl Cameron just insinuated on Fox news that Republicans in the Senate may postpone the Estrada nomination to another time when Bush has more time to help them put the pressure on the Democrats. Please email Frist and tell him don't do it. I hope Carl Cameron is wrong. But just in case....
Here is the link to his comments form:
http://frist.senate.gov/contact.cfm
Here is what I wrote:
Carl Cameron of Fox news just reported that you might be considering postponing the Estrada confirmation vote until a later date when President Bush has the time to help you. I am begging you not to do that. Momentum is gaining around the country in support of Estrada's nomination. Postponing the debate will make you look weak in the eyes of the Democrats. Please do not show weakness for the Democrats will stab you in the back and eat you alive and I believe you know this. Instead you should be requiring them to stay 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for their filibuster. Their behavior is an abomination and it's going to hurt their party in the '04 elections. Please don't cave. You have the upper hand here don't lose the momentum.
Thank you for your time.
Kindest regards,
Brenda Woodland

acco, I didn't hear Frist say it. A reporter said it. I don't know if it's true. I just want to make sure Frist hears us.

If it's true, they made some kind of deal with the dems. And you gave Lott shit for making deals? We'll see! I'm listening to Fox to find out.
Warlady
02-13-2003, 05:33 PM
Sheesh. Carl didn't even say which Republican made the statement. And I thought I was maybe overreacting.

Sorry Warlady. You know that I didn't like the whole crappy thing. I'll be cool.... until we find out.

Thanks Harv. We Republicans sure have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to our elected leaders. Please email Frist.

If you don't mind, I'd rather find out for sure before I email Frist.

Warlady....while emailing Frist won't hurt if we're wrong about his reasons, let me post a response at Freepville that might be true.
"I heard Hatch on Hannity a while ago. There are procedural problems. Several senators are recuperating from surgery. For example, McConnell is recovering from bypass surgery. Another senator's wife is undergoing medical treatment. If Frist required the Rats to debate through the recess, the Dems could leave a skeleton crew in DC and at anytime could note the absence of a quorum. If the Pubbies can't get their troops to respond, the Rats could require a cloture vore which they would lose. Frist really has no choice but to do this. (Don't Mess With Texas)"
It could also be that Frist is being clever. Several posts over there got me thinking about the strategy behind his decision.
"Actually the timing is great. He will be put up for a vote just as the bombs start falling. No way the dems will filibuster with the bombs falling!" (cinFLA)

Lapcat I wasn't referring to the week recess. Carl Cameron made it sound like they were going to drop the issue and pick it up much later. If he was only talking about the week recess then I have no problem with that because Mitch McConnell does need to be there and this gives him time to recover from his surgery. I hope you're right and it was only a week. As long as they don't drop the ball while they have momentum. I agree with the poster that said the Dems will go home and get chewed by the Hispanics. Everyone needs to write their Dem Senators and give them hell. Fortunately for me I don't have any Dem Senators. Nor do you hehehehe

Please keep in mind that Cameron is the reporter who dug up, at the last minute, Bush's beer bust twenty years ago... and wounded him just before the election. Hmmm.
I wonder why he did it when there was so much stuff around about Gore? I am very suspicious of this reporter and would take anything he says with a cup of salt.I have a gut instinct that I don't like about him. I dismiss him as a matter of course.

That wasn't Carl Cameron. That was some woman reporter. I think the one that covers homeland security now.

Carl Cameron traveled with Bush on the campaign trail. He's pro-Bush.

No, it was Cameron, I heard him say it at the time.
He may have traveled with Bush but he is not pro Bush.

He may have reported on it afterwards but it was a female reporter that was used by the Gore camp. I remember it very clearly that it was a female reporter from Fox news that was in the courthouse that day the guys from the Gore camp were discussing it within her earshot. I just can't remember her name.

According to ABC News of November 2000 (first one to pop up in Google) Erin Fehlau "a local reporter" first broke the story. Turns out she was a reporter for the Fox affiliate in Portland, Maine. Currently she is a weekend anchor (since 9/01) for WMUR a tv station in Manchester, New Hampshire and an ABC affiliate.

I remember CC talking about it on Fox and they covered it very matter of factly. As a "this happened 20 years ago and because everyone else is reporting it - here ya go". They didn't give it nearly the coverage that Blitzer gave it at CNN.

Here's the story about who broke the story.
Reporter Denies Being Manipulated
Erin Fehlau, the local TV reporter who broke the story, said she was confident it was “not a setup.”
Fehlau said a police officer had overheard a judge and a lawyer discussing the matter. (She would not reveal the identity of the lawyer, but Connolly later acknowledged his role.) The officer asked Fehlau, who was covering an unrelated story at the courthouse, if it was true. Fehlau said she then sought out Connolly, who provided her with a court document on the Bush case.
“When I ran up to him and asked him if he had anything on it, he said, yes he did,” Fehlau said Friday on ABCNEWS’ Good Morning America. “Did he look surprised? I guess he did look a little surprised.”

Here's what I wrote:
I heard from Carl Cameron (Fox) that you might postpone the Estrada nomination till a later time. Senator, I BEG you, I entreat you not to do it. I am an American citizen of Hispanic descent. I got my citizenship last year. I am a Republican at heart. I elected Republicans because I trust you to do the right thing. The right thing to do now is to elect Estrada as soon as possible. The time is most propitious and postponing it will only weaken the national support you now have. It's been a long time since we've had the benefit of a Republican president, a Replican House and Senate. Please do not let such an opportunity go to waste.
Respectfully,

Now you know I do not like to go into the "ethnic" nonsense, but I must admit that I inserted that bit with the most Machiavellian intentions at heart. Hope it will help.

This is the closest I can find as of this morning.
[ QUOTE ]
CNSNews.com) - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist Friday announced that the Senate will recess for the President's Day holiday instead of forcing a vote on the judicial nomination of Miguel Estrada.
Speaking at a Capitol Hill news conference Friday, Frist said he will try to force a vote on the nomination of Estrada to the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals after the recess is over and the Senate reconvenes.
The decision to recess the Senate without a vote contradicts what Frist said earlier this week. "We'll stay as late as they would like tonight and tomorrow night," Frist said Wednesday, according to the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call. "My expectation is that by the end of this week, and before our recess, and possibly into our recess, we expect what all American people expect and deserve; an up-or-down vote on this outstanding candidate."

There is still not a word to back up Cameron's allegation. He may have been offering a personal opinion rather than fact.

Looks like it Doc. I think Frist decided on the recess is because Mitch McConnell is recovering from surgery. I have no problem with that. But we all still need to email Frist with our support.
Maggie great letter. You misspelled Republican lol. No big deal. He'll know what you meant.

There's no good way to tell. Roll Call doesn't seem to have an ideological bias either way. Matson appears to have a lib bent, judging by his archives, but in this case he unwittingly scored.

Don't ya just LOVE living in Texas? And what a refreshing breeze blew in here last November! Ha ha ha ha!
I just hope that it turns out that Frist is as clever as Bush is and I think he just might be. Timing, after all, IS (that word again) everything.....eh?
