IRVINE, Calif. — A GOP state lawmaker was the odds-on favorite to win a special election Tuesday to fill the congressional seat left vacant when Republican Christopher Cox (javascript:siteSearch('Christopher Cox');) resigned to head the Securities and Exchange Commission (http://www.sec.gov/).
State Sen. John Campbell (javascript:siteSearch('John Campbell');) was running to succeed Cox, who represented the Orange County district in the House for 17 years.
Cambpell faced third-party candidate Jim Gilchrist (javascript:siteSearch('Jim Gilchrist');), a founder of the Minuteman Project border patrol group. Gilchrist made illegal immigration the centerpiece of his campaign, calling for thousands more guards to patrol the nation's borders.

Three other candidates were on the ballot: Democrat Steve Young, a lawyer who was given little chance in one of the most reliably Republican districts in the nation; Libertarian Bruce Cohen, a real estate broker; and Green Party candidate Bea Tiritilli, a schoolteacher.

Do you live in the county?... I'm glad a republican won, but disappointed that Jim Gilchrist lost. Their are quite a few people who feel that Campbell won't be as tough as Gilchrist when it actually comes down to immigration... I hope we're wrong :smirky:

i was really pulling for gilchrist in this one. He's way tougher on the immigration dilema.

Of course thats true . The CA GOP will learn that Illegal Immigration Issues almost cost them a seat and it created bumps in the Road . I think the trend might be for the next Generation GOP senators to be like Gilchrist .

On a Side note , the Southern Red Counties of CA should Rebel against the state and form something like 'South California' . We would have more then enough Population to be a state . OC on its own has 2.8 million people who vote 61% GWB.

If you Combine : OC , San diego , Riverside and San bernardino and you get a Decently populated Red state !:thumb:

And with Conservative domination we would be more able to make South Californias borders safe .

The major problem in Mexifornia (and MA and NY and ...) is the urban liberals who dominate state politics. Their sheer numbers overwhelm the GOP. CA is doomed. It will be overrun by illegals, the productive taxpayers will GTFO, and who will be left to pay the state's bills?

Gilchrist may have been a kook. He ran as a member of the American Independent Party. The American Independent Party is the California branch of the Constimatooshin Party. The Constipation Party is kook central. I believe he also supported the Green Party candidate in the special gubernatorial election a couple years back

You'd have to figure in the population though of LA County. Good suggestion, but we don't need Hollywood turning our new red state blue.

I'm glad Gilchrist lost and a Republican won. Especially if Gilchrist supported the Green party a few years back.

I'm happy a republican won too, but the main issue was immigration, and Gilchrist seemed the toughest on it.

I didnt include LA in the List . LA is not part of OC , San Diego , San bernardino or riverside . Learn to read a MAP .

Where do you think LA county would be, perhaps part of southern CA. Perhaps YOU need a NEW map:licky:

Your Orange county figure, where did you get it? It seems you were off by 4.3 million votes. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1270788/posts

Now, if you took the voters in 2004 from the counties in Southern California, Bush recieved 2,362,566 votes to Kerry's 2,751,427... Your idea is a good one but it wouldn't help.

On social issues it votes with Republicans , although it is a John Kerry County mainly cause of its 15% unemployed and however that would improve if it joined a New california state .

The southern californian conservative countys would never form a new state if LA county was to be Included .

First off I never said LA was in OC.

I agreed with you, but no one would be able to pick and choose which counties would be included, and having a Southern California state with LA county, well...

In the end, I hope Campbell can prove his critics wrong and stay firm on immigration.
