Former Minnesota Sen. Eugene J. McCarthy, whose insurgent campaign toppled a sitting president in 1968 and forced the Democratic Party to take seriously his message against the Vietnam War, died Saturday.

McCarthy, who indicated he thought Reagan was an extremist, nonetheless supported him in '80, mainly because he considered Carter an incompetent.

Of course, anyone with an eye, an ear, and at least half a brain could have figured that out about Carter.
