(CBS) CHICAGO A candidate in Illinois is all too familiar with the toll the war in Iraq is taking. Major Tammy Duckworth lost both of her legs in combat there.
Now her opposition to the president's policies is motivating this Democrat for her next battle: the one to win a seat in the U.S. Congress in a traditionally Republican district in the western suburbs.
CBS 2's Joanie Lum has more on her announcement.
Major Tammy Duckworth walks with her husband's assistance but stands firmly against President Bush and the Iraq war.
The former helicopter pilot lost both legs last year when her National Guard unit was shot down over Baghdad.

Rom Emmanual is pretty smart. He runs the Congressional campaign for the demonrats and he's been beating the bushes (pardon the pun) to find Iraq vets to run as demonrats for Congress.
Got to hand it to him, it's good strategy.

As for Duckworth's chances, I don't think she has a leg to stand on. [ducks]

A former war vet running as a Democrat has about as much alure as a former acid head hippie surfer bum running as a Republican.

"We should focus our military resources on pursuing terrorists who attacked our country and capturing Osama bin Laden," said Duckworth
I see she's parroting the Demo talking points. I really get tired of hearing this. Have we really stopped looking for Osama bin Laden? What a bunch of bullshit.

Some people come back bitter from war and instead of blaming the soldiers (I use the term loosly here) who are responsible for their experience, they blame the commanders and administration who sent them. Bitterness never solves anything and it is not a productive attitude to have when one is trying to make a change.

The natural assumption when one sees a wounded soldier back from war is that he/she joined the Military because they believed in its mission and always have a mature professional sense of duty...
However there are a number of people out there who have the John Kerry syndrome - They use the military as a stepping stone in their intricately-planned obsession with a career in politics... They begin this path from an early age and are driven by power lust... For them, a tour in the military is just a paragraph on their resume'... I have strong suspicions about anyone who comes back from a combat tour just to immediately thrust themselves into a political race... If we were to look into this gal's background we might find that she has been a lefty from way back...
