Richmond (AP) - A federal court has upheld Virginia laws requiring public schools to lead children in a daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and to display the national motto, "In God We Trust."

...

In his February 21st opinion, Cacheris wrote that the law does not have a religious purpose because its aim is to "foster democracy."

The judge wrote that the law does not force any student to accept the beliefs enunciated by the pledge.

Well, at least one court with alittle commen sense and the wisdom to recognize the pledge does not violate a principle of the constitution.

Well, it certainly looks like the Supreme Court will have to rule on it now. You can't have one court saying one thing and another court saying something else entirely.

Exactly right, Greymon...just one more reason why the obstruction of the Senate Dimocraps is so important. Breyer, Stevens, Rhenquist, O'Connor and possibly Ginsberg may want to retire in the next 6 years. Having Constitution-friendly Justices on the SC is of utmost importance to the survival of our Republc. This is THE reason why it will be vitally important to get GW re-elected.

I expect Breyer and Ginsburg will try and hold out until a Democrat is in the President's chair again. If Bush gets reelected, I think Stevens will have to step down, as much as he may hate to do so under a Republican's reign. I hope Rehnquist doesn't step down in July, but I really think he might (especially with his recent fall, God bless his precious soul). I'm not sure about O'Connor. She certainly acts quite youthful for her age. She may stick around for another few years. The one that may stun people is Scalia. He has frequently complained about his role as the "originalist" dissenter. I think he'll wait and see how the 2004 elections turn out. Kennedy, Thomas, and Souter will be around for a good many more years.
