McKINNEY, Texas - A woman accused of killing her 10-month-old daughter by cutting off the baby's arms with a kitchen knife pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Monday at the start of her murder trial.

Dena Schlosser, 37, said nothing and stared straight ahead, sometimes gently rocking back and forth, as her attorney entered the plea.
Later, during opening statements, her attorney said Schlosser clearly did not know right from wrong during the November 2004 slaying of baby Margaret.

"This is somebody who at the time was not capable of knowing what she was doing was wrong," defense attorney William Schultz said. "She didn't see it coming. ... Normally Dena is a sweet woman. She cares, she has compassion."

Prosecutor Curtis Howard disagreed, saying that while Schlosser obviously had mental problems she did know right from wrong when she killed her daughter.

"At some point that morning, Dena Schlosser put Maggie Schlosser down on the bed and cut off her arms," he said.

Schlosser was arrested in 2004 after she told a 911 operator she had severed her baby's arms. Police found Schlosser in the living room, covered in blood, still holding a knife and listening to a church hymn.
Schlosser was diagnosed with manic depression after her arrest. In February 2005, a jury deliberated only a few minutes before deciding Schlosser was mentally incompetent to stand trial and she was committed to North Texas State Hospital in Vernon. But in May, a judge decided Schlosser was competent.

I'm speechless.

She cut off her daughter's arms, eh? Just a wild and crazy woman, but she's sweet, she's caring, and she's full of compassion, according to the ogre's asshole of a defense attorney. Drop them both alive into a vat of aqua regia and be done with them.

Normally I support capital punishment for anyone harming children, but this lady is just nuts. She needs permanent Mental Health. The problem is that she will get off with the "Not Guilty by reason of Insanity Plea". So she will spend 20 years (at best) in a nuthouse then walk. The law needs to be changed so that we can convict this type of nutcase. Change it so that it is Guilty because of Insanity, then give her 20 years in a nuthouse, followed by the rest of her life in prison.

I hesitate to say a person has a demon or is possessed, but in this case I cant see how could happen any other way.

I agree that she's insane, but I'd be content to see her spend the rest of her life in a mental institution. Pity you can't "sentence" people to life in a straight jacket... I fear for her young neighbors should she walk the streets again.

I'm not concerned with whether a person was demon-possessed, or insane, or had mental problems. Put a .45 slug in the brain, point blank range.

If this woman is that big of a nut job, why isn't she a high-ranking member of the Democrat(ic) party?

Whether she is or isn't mentally stable is irrelevant, imho. She should be removed from society, she belongs incarcerated (either in a mental facility or criminal institution), without returning to society proper. Some crimes do not warrant a "second chance" within regular society, because the risk is just too high that another might be harmed.
I do believe there are factors that can contribute to one's actions, BUT that NEVER excuses them if they choose to act on them. Actions have consequences, period. I was sick, I'm sorry, I'm better, Let me out -- is NOT good enough.

I'm not concerned either when it comes to sentencing. To me she's gone for good one way or another after a crime like this. None of this mental rehab crap and back to society they go. My point was I just can't see a sane person doing this.

Granted, she would be out of the way of society in any of the sentencing cases, which should be the only way to go about it. But if we are not to let this monster (yep, I still consider an insane killer to be a monster) back out into society, why let the taxpayers fund her stay in a mental institution? The longer she is there, the more they "work" on her, there could be a chance she gets out. I would opt against that possibility.

She is a killer. Death row, that's my suggestion.

Death row "for a short time" is fine with me.
