SARASOTA, Fla. — A weeping Joseph Smith (javascript:siteSearch('Joseph Smith');) apologized Tuesday for the abduction, rape and murder of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia (javascript:siteSearch('Carlie Brucia');) two years ago, telling a judge he had taken large amounts of cocaine and heroin that day in hopes of killing himself.

Smith told Circuit Judge Andrew Owens, who will sentence Smith to death or life in prison, that "I do not ask for mercy for myself. The only thing I can see to give me a life sentence is for my family. I do not want to see them hurt any further."

Would that his execution would be certain and swift - but as we all know, they'll drag this out for years with appeals.

I hope this judge has the moral fiber to give this little girl justice... Forget the appeals - Do the right thing and let the Justice system go thru whatever gyrations it must...

He deserves death, nothing more, nothing less.

And I'm afraid you are right, even IF he receives the death penalty, more than likely he will STILL be sucking up taxpayer dollars 10-15 years later ... just like the serial killer of college students Danny Rolling.

Exactly, he's admitted to the crime and the prosecution has painted the picture about as clear as anyone could. There is no reasonable doubt to this man's guilt.

It's already been two years - he should go straight from the sentencing to a hangman's noose. Instead he'll likely get 15 years of appeals and die an over-sexed fat man and of natural causes.

he had taken large amounts of cocaine and heroin that day in hopes of killing himself. Every time a story like this comes out with the same "excuse" from a maggot, I am reminded to send another letter to my state representatives urging them to pass a bill to not only remove alcohol/drug abuse as an extenuating circumstance, but to give the state all the more reason to execute the bastard. Ditto to drunk drivers who kill innocent motorists and pedestrians.

I agree with Riverboat. You want to take hard substances into your body, and you cause someone's death because of them, you forfeit your life, scumbag.

Did the little girl plead for her life as it ended?

You took the words right off my keyboard, DS -- I was going to say, Carlie Brucia's Killer Pleads for His Life? ... I bet Carlie did too, so I think we should give him as much deference as he showed Carlie. Although the human side of me would desire stronger measures (we need Ol' Sparky back!), lethal injection is acceptable, and as quickly as possible.

This is one of those instances where the death penalty needs to be completed as soon as possible. There should be no taking advantage of technicalities. He is guilty, there is no doubt reasonable or otherwise. There is no reason for delay.

He is asking for mercy for his family his wife is now in prison on drug and prostitution charges. It is appalling that he would insult the judge and jury by asking.

Seeing him cry was almost pleasant. He is crying because he got caught and was found guilty. Had he been found not guilty by any of his mitigating circumstances, I assure you, the peals of laughter would still be ringing in the courthouse. Are his tears somehow more moving than a child's? I don't think so. He didn't think so as he killed that little girl.

There is no reason to wait. Sentence should be carried out immediately.

Carlie's pleas went unheard and so should her killers. Blame it on drugs is so lame.
Joseph, may it burn as the drugs that kill you enters your veins.

I agree 100%. He raped a murdered a child. He should be raped and murdered himself. I say, extended privledges to whoever removes this scum from the plante AFTER everyone in the cellblock has their turn!

If Smith is not raped and murdered (and who knows what else he may have done to the child?), then there is no way his death sentence can truly be either defended or condemned as "an eye for an eye."
