I have grown a few heirloom vegetables before.
They are good to eat.
I suggest anyone wanting a new variety this year to try a Heirloom variety.
The ones I have tried is Bennings Green tint squash,Jacobs cattle beans,Lincoln peas and more.
The seeds I bought were from a place in my state that sold old varieties.

I am a seed saver...that is to say that each year for my tomato plants I save the first to ripen, the tastiest, the largest, the meatiest, etc...
I now have Roma tomatoes that are so meaty that they have only 15 to 20 seeds.
1# and a 2 # tomato. So far, I haven't been able improve on the grape tomato.
I have a very nice mediium size tomato that is very solid.
This year I started some plants from seed several months ago instead of waiting until March to start the seeds. I hope to have tomatoes by the time one would normally plant the seedlings out of doors. (May Or June in our area)
The interesting thing is that for 2 years in a row, the first tomato to ripen for the table was a 1# variant of the heritage Brandywine.
