There were some eye-opening remarks from Bryant Gumbel (http://www.mrc.org/projects/gumbel/gumbel_bias.asp) on the most recent episode of HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel (http://www.hbo.com/realsports/index.html). According to a transcript posted by a television columnist named Seth Frelich (http://www.pajiba.com/the-clip-show.htm), Gumbel said the following in his closing monologue last week (emphasis mine):"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don’t care about them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying ... Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

TURIN, Italy -- American speed skater Shani Davis, the sport's reigning world all-around champion, Saturday became the first black athlete ever to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual event.

Davis held off a star-studded field in the 1,000-meter race with a winning time of 1:08.89. Teammate Joey Cheek won the silver, adding to the 500-meter gold medal he won earlier in the week. Erben Wennemars of the Netherlands took the bronze.

The USA had a good chance at gold in the team event if he would've raced, but instead had to settle for third without him.

His refusal to race angered some of his teammates, who viewed it as a selfish decision on his part.

The one who's hardest on Shani Davis is the one who wanted a 5th gold medal of his own. His only chance at it was in the team pursuit event, which Davis sat out for a good reason -- his event was only two days away, and it would have sapped his strength. I don't blame him a bit.

I never understand why we don't do better in all Olympic sports, including the trashsports. I mean, we have a huge population, we have some of the best training and competion facilities in the world, and we have plenty of leisure time. Yet people, sometimes from tiny, overcrowded countries where the average annual per-capita income is less than the cost of a pair of athletic shoes, are able to clean our clocks.

Unless people are being deprived of opportunities, whiney comments like this should stop. It's like complaining about a 5% prevalence of blacks in a company in which 95% of the applicants are white. Exactly. Blacks tend to do great at running and jumping (hence their "overrepresentation" in the NBA) but tend to do poorly at standardized IQ tests (hence their "underrepresentation" in the fields of science and philosophy). Whites tend to do great in some of the intellectual fields, but don't do as well as blacks in running (Kenya dominates the Marathon) or jumping (blacks dominate the NBA).

But of course to even state these obvious truths tends to result in the Mindless (and hate-filled, and quite stupid) Liberals launching their usual neo-Nazi Hate Attacks, as professors Herrnstein (Edgar Pierce Chair in Psychology at Harvard) and Murray (Ph.D, Political Science, MIT) well knew.
