One of my big hobbies outside of music is Civil War history, research and discussion.

I belong to a couple Civil War forums, but the layout is the layered thread type and really annoying to read so I started my own site.

I find that the stories BEHIND the stories are what make the Civil War so interesting. Many of the things you always hear or read about have a underlying and IMHO more interesting story than some of the original stories.

140 years later it's amazing that there is still so much to learn about the times, the people and the events that led up to the war and it's major role in the definition of America.

My son went to a Civil War Ball last year:

They had a lot of fun learning about things of that era.

My hubby inherited The Confederate Medal of Honor from his great -(great?) grandfather who was in the war. It's called the Southern Cross.

Sure - you're in. Better check our posting rules - this is a hardcore reenactor site and the mods will jump you pretty quick if you drift outside the posting rules.

Thanks.. I probably won't post a whole lot... a site like that I would probably lurk around and look for information.

I'm certainly a "farb" when it comes to reenacting :) LOL!

My husband inherited this medal from his great-grandfather along with some other things. The story goes that his GG was severely shell shocked after the war and every time he saw a Yankee, the family had to restrain him. He'd yell, "get off my land you filthy yankee", and he would go for his gun. He died soon after he got this medal. He sold a piece of property or rather had it stolen (not sure) in what is now called "5 points" in Atlanta, a huge business district.

I'm saying this is the South. And we're proud of our crazy people. We don't hide them up in the attic. We bring 'em right down to the living room and show 'em off. See, no one in the South ever asks if you have crazy people in your family. They just ask what side they're on.

In the last couple of years before his accidental death, my brother and I were doing Civil War re-enactments... We organized the 28th Alabama Infantry, Co. G, which was originally mustered out of our local area...

Mark, my brother, being a professional artist and LONG TIME Civil War enthusiast did some research and found a description of the company flag, which he reproduced to the best of his ability on silk... Mark had actually been doing re-encactments for about 20 years - I was the newcomer to the hobby...

The battles were very realistic and properly chaotic and noisy, but in truth, we enjoyed the post battle camp life the best... Saturday night was a night of carousing and poker and song and the occasional sample of moonshine... Most of the other re-enactors were very serious about the authenticity of their clothing and equipment, and participation in those weekend events were like being in a Hollywood movie...

We also had our share of rascals too... Once I recall that just before a major event was about to kick off, the Yankees and Rebs facing off across the field of death, hundreds of sprectators watching in eager anticipation for the show to begin, artillery guns at the ready for the prebattle barrage, one of our more rascally rascals turned a live chicken loose and then proceded to chase it across the battlefield...

It broke the place up... :D

Therein lies the beauty of the hobby - sitting around the fire with your messmates. None of the other stuff will stick with me as much as hearing strains of 'Marvin the Moose' from some knucklehead two fires down.
