Hey Y'all,
I am just about to bust a gut, I got goose-pimples and the shakes. Just got a call from my son who is at college right now. He called with the MOST exciting news, I just HAD to share it with my friends (and I'm sure y'all won't think me bragging or anything, I just HAD to you guys because y'all mean a lot to me!)

Okay, I'm calm ... here goes ....

My son was hand-picked for a special meeting with the President of the college! His instructor came up to his booth (he was working on a welding project) and told him the Director of Technical Progams wanted to see him on an urgent matter. We'll poor li'l Bubba, he thought it was about the math mid-term he took on Tuesday (he has been struggling in math, but trying REAL hard). Anyway, he thought he was in trouble.

When He got to the Technical Director's office he called him in and said he had a serious matter to discuss with him. I can just imagine my son was shaking like a leaf, :smirky: (course, that may just be the projection of a mother, LOL). He explained that he was chosen for this meeting, and that it is a HUGE honor! He told my son that he would be receiving an official invitation in the mail, and everything!

I'm on cloud-nine y'all! I would ask, if you don't mind, to send up a few prayers for my li'l man. He is wrestling with the decision to take this further through for a degree (right now he is in the certificate program for dual enrolled high school students). He is frightened by the requirements (mainly math, which is his bane), but he has already been told by his instructor and the Director that he would most certainly get a scholarship if he so desired. He is blessed in this respect in three different ways -- the scholarship (which he's been told is his if he wants it), his college is completely paid for right now (because we particiapted in the Prepaid College Program), and his boss (the owner!) at the plumbing company told him he would pay for his college through the apprenticeship program if he chose to go for plumbing instead of welding.

Anyway, he is faced with a lot of decisions. I believe this meeting will be a positive reinforcement for him, at least I am praying it will be.

Besides all that ..... YEEEEEEHAAAAAWWWWWW! I am a proud Mama!!!

Congratulations Homes! Things appear to be coming along nicely

About the math troubles - I can sympathize, as math has always been my weak spot as well. I was greatly assisted by a book in the REA Problem Solvers series when I took calc, and would like to recommend them to you and your son. They are basically phone-book size books of fully worked out problems, with every single step explained - the sort of thing traditional textbooks aren't so hot at doing. Also they give many varieties of examples, unlike many math texts that will only show a few worked out problems and then expect you to be able to apply the concept very broadly, which can be difficult if math isn't your thing. Also, the price is right!

Here's the one for algebra and trig, but if that's not what he's doing they have them for pretty much every type of math and many other subjects as well.

Homes: Pass on my congratulations to Li'l Bubba.

Bob: Math was always easy for me, so it was my major in college (chemistry was my minor) and back in the 1950s I was a math and science teacher. Later, I taught calculus in adult education classes. That was fun because they chose to take the course and were willing to work.

Thanks for the congrats, y'all, I really appreciate the good wishes. This completely came out of the blue, and I really do believe it will be just the boost he needs right now.

Perhaps it is because I am more comfortable in my abstract mind (most creative people are), and I believe that of our children he is the most like me, so that he inherited my inability for math and calculations. You would THINK, since math is pretty black and white (an arrangement I am quite comfortable with in theory, :smirky: ), that it would be easy for me (and by extension, him), but that's just not the case. That has been the one consistent struggle all through our schooling. I DO believe the college situation is helping, but you know, as a mother, well we just can't stand to see our children struggling at anything, .

Anyway, Bob, I do appreciate the helpful suggestions. We currently sit and await his scores for his math mid-term he took last Tuesday. He was SUPPOSED to get them the next day, then the next, and then today, but the teacher is now saying Monday :uhh: . That will be the indication we need to see what course of action we need to take (regarding math).

As for his success in his Program, he is at the top of his class (which INCLUDES regularly enrolled college students, besides my son who is the only dual enrolled student). He just recently made the first 100 they've had in the program for two years! I have no fears for his success here, I just don't want him to give up on so much more because he is troubled by one particular academic subject.

Thanks again, y'all!
Blessings,
Hms

Congrats to Li'l Bubba, Hms!

As for that math...well, I gotta tell ya I was in the same boat as Li'l Bubba. Dreaded it, but I could do it. The only thing that worked for me was repetition. I just kept working the problems until they made sense. Then comes confidence and speed. I know it's a simple solution, but sometimes that's all it takes.

Hang in there, Li'l Bubba!
