Yesterday, my wife, a good friend of ours, and I went to the Body Worlds exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philly. Although it was crowded, and the lighting in each exhibit wasn't always the best... It was...
Amazing... simply amazing...
The level of detail will blow you away. There is an incredible display of embryos at each stage of development.
I was surprised that I wasn't grossed out at all, these are after all, real "bodies" that are preserved using a process called plastination. I've found those open heart surgeries on those health shows to be more disgusting.
Being that March is Colon Cancer Awarness month, a local hospital had two artificial colons and colonoscopes and allowed anyone who wanted to to guide the colonoscope in (viewing fake polyps along the way). It was very interesting.
There were horizontal slices of a 580 lb. man next to slices of a slim 140 lb. man. The differences were startling, the subcutaneous fat made the slices of the obese man look like... well... bacon.
As far as I can gather, a lot of the men on display died from lung cancer, and the display had a few displays of the heavy tar deposits on the lungs and cancer that had taken over...
There are three traveling exhibits, Body Worlds 3 will be in Houston till 9/4. Body Worlds 2 will be in Denver from 3/10 - 7/23. The "original" Body Worlds (the one I saw) will be in Philly at the Franklin Institute till 4/23 and then in St. Paul from 5/5 - 9/4.
It wasn't cheap (tickets were $25 each), but if you have the opportunity, I highly recommend it! http://forums.gottadeal.com/images/smilies/smilies/thumbleft.gif
