Woman who home-schools kids gets nod for spot on education board </MCC HEAD>

DALLAS - An attorney who homeschools her children won the Republican nomination in Tuesday's primary for a spot on the State Board of Education.

Cynthia Dunbar had 62 percent of the vote in the District 10 race with 73 percent of the precincts reporting. Businessman Tony Dale had 38 percent.
"Every candidate likes to feel that they have gotten the mandate on the issues," Dunbar said as she left her home in Richmond for a victory party. "My positions are the ones my district supports."
She said voters responded to her because she supports teaching intelligent design in science classes. She also wants the state board to assume more authority in choosing textbooks...

[THIS ONE IS FOR LONGHORN]...Montgomery, a retired teacher, says he would maintain the balance of power among the state and local school boards. He wants to end all social promotion of underperforming students.

...and how about THESE (http://enr.sos.state.tx.us/06prirep.htm#14) propositions?

I agree that is an awesome story. My Salute to the people of Texas on this issue.

We Home schooled our Kids and they are doing exceptionally well. One tested into his first year of College as a Sophomore.

Maybe Texas will set a trend and we can turn the defunct government education program around.

The one thing that scares me is that she's an Attorney.

Strange. Can't find the actual propositions anywhere. How do you know whether to vote for them or not if you can't read what they actually say? They're probably there somewhere. I just couldn't find them. I'm not a TX resident anymore anyway (wish I still was).

2006 Republican Primary Ballot Initiatives (all are Yes or No questions)

Photo Id: The Texas Legislature should enact legislation requiring that voters provide valid photo identification in order to cast a ballot in any and all elections conducted in the State of Texas.
Private Property Protection: The Texas Legislature should place on the next constitutional amendment election ballot a proposition to protect private property from being taken for economic purposes.
Spending Cap: Every governmental body in Texas should be required to limit any annual increase in spending to the combined increase of population and inflation, except for additional spending authorized by a vote of the people or for official state of emergencies declared by the federal or state government.
Appraisal Cap: In order to address the inequity of homeowner’s property taxes increasing at a rate far above the rate of inflation, the current 10% cap on the rate of increase of appraised value for all homesteads shall be reduced to 5% or less.

AND FOR COMPARISON...

2006 Democrat Primary Ballot Initiatives

Do you support lifting millions of families above the national poverty line by increasing the state minimum wage above its current level of $5.15 per hour?

Do you support the restoration of Texans' full rights to a trial by jury in civil cases?

Private Property Protection: The Texas Legislature should place on the next constitutional amendment election ballot a proposition to protect private property from being taken for economic purposes.Taken by whom and for what kind of economic purpose? I still support eminent domain for public (not private/commercial) projects that revitalize blighted areas. It's the recent decisions about seizing private land for private/commercial projects, even in non-blighted areas, that I vehemently oppose.

Do you support lifting millions of families above the national poverty line by increasing the state minimum wage.......What is the "national poverty line"? "Millions" would include ten percent of the state population and include households making $25,000 or less. I don't consider that poverty, and raising the minimum wage has never reduced poverty anyway.

I believe the private property protection proposition (say THAT 5 times fast) was created to address the recent abuses of eminent domain that have attracted nationwide attention. You're right--they should be more specific in the wording. The spending cap proposition seems to be a largely meaningless gesture, since we know that lawmakers tend to find plenty of wiggle room to allow them to spend, spend, spend.

The minimum wage prop, if you notice, was from the Democrat primary.

I noticed. It's their typical ridiculous diatribe designed to do nothing more than get more votes, cleverly disguised to the uninformed as a solution to a problem.

And my Congressman, Tom DeLay, handily won the Republican primary with 62% of the vote.

My Congressman (State Level) Dan Flynn easily won his primary, My Federal Congressman, Ralph Hall was unopposed on the primary level.
