The best sleeping pill is a big bowl of ice cream just before bed. I guarantee it.:thumb:

Such sleep-induced side effects while on the medications have been around for years, but the incidence is rising because of an explosion in the drugs' use, specialists said.

About 30 million people in the United States take sleep medications, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. By some counts that is a 50 percent jump since the beginning of the decade.

Some of the most serious side effects are short-term memory loss, and accidents involving patients who drive the next day while still feeling drugged.

I've got a better idea: Don't take Ambien. LOL

This isn't about Ambien. It addresses all sleep medicines. Ambien was just one example. A lot of things in the article are related to activities you aren't supposed to engage in, and some are related to outright abuse. One of the things that strikes me is that they never identified these "researchers in Minnesota". That makes me somewhat skeptical.

Best, you've obviously never had chronic insomnia. If only ice cream worked! Sometimes you have no choice but to take a sleep medicine. I've been there and done that. After going 46 hours with no sleep, and a total inability to get it, sleep medicine is a true blessing.

Has anybody ever listened to those Ambien commercials? It cracks me up when they say, "Possible side-effects include drowsiness." Duh! I'm waiting for the Viagra commercial to say, "Possible side-effects include erections."

I feel for ya, Rhino.

While that story isn't necessarily about Ambien, I just wonder what people did before Ambien?

Thanks, but I don't suffer from it anymore. Mine was caused by another medication. I only used Ambien for a short period, which is all anybody is supposed to use it for. It was great for sleep, but hell for grogginess the next day, so I always hated taking it. That and the fact that it's a narcotic. I would have much preferred ice cream.

Before Ambien? Probably alcohol.

When I used to have insomnia when I was younger, we used an herb called valerian (spelling?) that is very potent when brewed into a tea. It always (and still does) knock me out within 20 minutes of ingesting it. Don't know about more serious cases of insomnia, like staying awake for nearly 2 days, though.
