View Full Version : Can't see Icons or Avatars on FreeCon

To Doctor Doom or anyone else who can help me sort this out..
About two weeks ago (roughly?) I remember reading that there were some changes in progress or upcoming on the Free Conservatives site. Shortly after I saw that, I noticed that some posters' avatars were no longer visible when I viewed threads. I also began to lose the image depictions of smilie icons and button icons for formatting threads. This progressed to the point that now I cannot see ANY avatars on any posters or button icons. I CAN still see images imbedded in posts and in sigs, and I still have full functionality (I think) to place smilies and format my own posts, but instead of seeing visible representations of smilies and the option buttons, I see instead the code descriptions, such as :[:(smilie]: and "Bold", "Italic", etc.
Is anyone else experiencing this? If so, is this a temporary thing? And if it's just me, do I need to reset options somewhere? I looked through my various profile options, but I haven't been able to 'fix' this myself.
Any advice or help would be appreciated!
A little background info if it helps.. I use Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 to browse the internet and I have a fairly top end system. I haven't had any trouble with images up 'til now, and I don't have trouble with any other websites.

I can still see your avatar (and others) just fine, but I've never been able to get my own avatar to show up. Probably something I'm doing wrong.
BTW, I use Internet Explorer 6.0

I've seen no problems, but I'm not familiar with Firefox. Might be a cache issue. Do you have a copy of IE installed that you can use temporarily just to get a comparison?
NA, paste your avatar into a post and I'll see what I can do.

Oh, wait. It looks like I'm about to be in DC for another week, so we'll have to try playing with the avatar later.

Q: do you have Adblock running? If so, see if you clicked it inadvertently and locked out FC as an image source.

Hmmm, something has changed. I just re-uploaded my avatar, and now it shows up in my posts! However, now the word "avatar" in everybody's posts in this thread is in a different font from the rest of the text in their messages!
Weird....

But hey, at least my chosen avatar now shows up!

It's because of the edits that were made to the htacess to try and prevent hot linking. My images went screwy when I did it at my place too. I will try to see if I can fix it.

That's bullshit. Elgalad has been saying this has been going on for about two weeks. I'm callig you on this, NOW.

Thomas I have edited that document myself when we had issues to resolve "a couple of weeks ago". Since this post was made today it's the first I knew there was a problem. But it's the same kind of thing that happend at my place. As I told you it's a touchy document in the way it deals with VB. I am still trying to figure it out myself. Calm down. I am aware it could be something I did, it just needs to be fixed.

Well Suzie, whatever you did, my avator is showing up correctly for the first time since I joined this BBS. So kudos to you!

I can see your avatar, but I havn't been able to upload mine for months. Until a few weeks ago it suddenly worked again.

Thomas it looks like you've been called on. I'd appreciate it if you would take your hysteria to that other forum. Man I had no idea you had such a temper.

Doctor Doom, I use 3 different programs to detect and kill spyware: Norton antivirus and internet security (always on), spybot, and ad-aware. The last two don't screen anything, as far as I know.
I looked through all three of these to try to find anything that had been quarantined or limited, but I couldn't find anything. I wonder if it's something with Mozilla that's doing this.
I still don't see icons or avatars. If images are being blocked though, wouldn't that also prevent images inside posts? I do see those..

Clear your page storage if you haven't since I made the edits. Your computer may have saved the images the way they looked before.

Suzie, is that the same as clearing your cache?

Yes. Same difference. Knock down the cob webpages and start new freshly loaded stuff.

Okay, this is.. strange. But good!
Suddenly as of tonight all of my smilies, avatars, and editing buttons are back!
I don't know what you all changed, but I haven't done anything on my end since I last posted. I had almost given up on seeing these things again.. they really add a lot to this place!
Anyways, I just wanted to say Thanks to whoever 'fixed' the problem. :thumb:

I didn't do it, but I'll be happy to take full credit.

Well..
Whatever the 'fix' was, it was short lived. Everything's back to screwed up again.
I don't mean to complain, but it's difficult to post when I can't even select the various editing features. I could probably live without being able to see folks' avatars, since that's mostly just aesthetics anyway.. but I gotta have my colors, hotlinking, and bolding! <weak smile="">
Ah well, I'll keep trying to adjust my settings, though I doubt that'll help. I've tried everything on my end at least twice already.

I have three installed browsers, and all of them display properly.
Are you using a proxy server?

Yes, that was the same problem I had.

I don't think I am.. under my internet options settings in Mozilla, I've got 'direct connection to the internet' selected. My connection is via cable modem.
I have this same problem with Internet Explorer, so it isn't just Firefox that's doing it. And I haven't made any changes since it 'worked' about a week ago. Something outside my system is doing this I think. This is the only website that's affected, every other one I've been to shows images just fine.

Hey Suzie, I like the new avatar! You look quite cute in that one! I'm married (and happily!) but I hope you don't mind me saying that about you. Really, that's a nice picture of you! A winner, I'd say.
(BTW, I don't really look too much like the avatar I've chosen for myself, but it's not too far from the truth....)

Well thank you, I had that photo in my profile and Riverboat requested I make it my avatar, so I told him I would change it ... just for him. He's been crushed since I let the bangs grow out.
I am happily married too, BTW. ;)
