After a number of failures in its Martian program, NASA successfully got the Mars Orbiter in orbit around Mars. I wonder what the feelings on this board are on potential life on that planet. Is there primitive life or might it have become extinct at some point. Will we ever find traces of it, or was there never any life to begin with. Pointless speculation will do.
Yes there is, or was primitive life on Mars. We might find traces of it.

If there was life, I hope it was conservative. Otherwise, no big loss.

My vote is no. Too much militates against it. However, I qualify that by saying that I refer to indigenous life. Take that FWIW.

There have been small rocks from Mars that haad tiny 'tubes', which looked very much like fossilized remains of something a microscopic snake might make. That is about the only arguement that life existed on Mars, along with the deduction that those huge valleys and riverways might once had contained water.
For a little brain tweaker, check out Europa. Personally, that is my belief of where we might find life. http://geo.web.ru/~tevelev/planet/europa.gif
It is an ice-encrusted planet, but because of dilation from Jupiter, the planet has a lot of friction and tectonic activity, giving it a warm interior. The ice extends down maybe as far as 200 km until it turns into water. I think that ice would act as an atmosphere, blocking most of the radiation from the sun.

Scientists believe there is/was life on mars in the form of atoms or cells yet they dont consider a Fetus to be a form of life. I believe there might have been life on mars. God never said anything about there being another planet with life and he did not say there wasnt. That leaves me thinking there might have been life on mars. They chances of a planet having a lifeform of any type is so hard and rare and for there to be a planet like ours that has life forms like us and other species leaves me to believe it even more that only god could create a planet like ours.

Time to record my guess! The field is even again!
I somehow feel that if there ever was something there it would have stuck. I know there are supposed to have been unfavourable changes on Mars, but life, once established, is resilient. On earth life has clung to the seemingly most unfavourable enviroments and is thriving there. If there was any life we would have found traces of that. They would have been obvious. The fact that we havn't yet makes me pessimistic about it being there or ever having been there.

It's an interesting question. We knows microbes can live inside rocks deep beneath the Earth's crust - you can drill down a long way and they are everywhere. So we don't see anything alive on the surface of Mars, according to the limited abilities of space probes. But say there had been life way back, in the days of a water Mars. Once it dried out, they could have continued living under the surface, and we won't be able to tell until we can have either people exploring there or really good robot landers, either of which can dig deeper.
Then if we were to find life, we'd have the tougher questions. Is it actually Earth life that was transported to Mars from meteor impacts? Or the reverse - could life on Earth actually be...Martian in origin? Hehehe...
Checking out the metabolism and genome (however it would work on the Martian life) would be awesome. It'd be quite intense to see if it were totally a novel type of life or something related to Earth life.

We won't know for certain the answer to that question until a detailed study is conducted of Martian geology. And our current crop of robotic rovers, while able to perform a cursory examination, simply don't have the mobility or scientific capabilities to carry out such a broad-scoped mission.

As for present life on Mars. If there is, it will be microbial in form, and it will be far below the surface. As for past life, it's quite possible, though I doubt if it was then anything larger than microbes or bacterial in nature. If there had been actual land dwelling forms of life of any significant size, or even vegetation, the evidence would be readily available in the form of fossils or fossilized remains.
As for the question of life on another planet? I have always believed that somewhere there is. There would HAVE to be, no mater what your "religious" beliefs are.
Take our galaxy alone. There are billions of stars, of which, our Sun is only one. Now if even 1 percent of the stars in our galaxy contain a planetary system, the odds of there NOT being an inhabited planet, even in our own galaxy are so small to begin with. Then take into account that our galaxy is just one galaxy in a space that stretches on to infinity, or as closet to it as can be accurately imagined by the human mind. A space filled with uncountable numbers of galaxies, each with their own "billions of stars" and each one of those stars with the possibility of planetary systems.
You begin to approach numbers that on their own suggest that if there are no other planets with intelligent life, if Earth truly is all that there really is... seems like a pretty big waste of space don't you think?

Martians look like little chipmunks. Actually, more like meerkats. They stand around all day on their hind feetsies, looking for hawks and eagles and ground predators. They ignore threats of rain or snow and only really worry about high speed reckless drivers. When not on lookout they're deep down in the ground screwing.

Europa has oceans of water. These are frozen on the surface but they could be liquid underneath as Europa has an internal heat source and is geologically active. That seems to be caused by gravitational forces from Jupiter and other moons of Jupiter.

Reminds me of a joke:
Bill Clinton was looking out the window of the oval office one winter, and he sees that someone has pissed "Bill Sucks" in the snow below the window.
Outraged, he calls the secret service into the office and says:
"Get out there right now, get a sample of that urine down to the lab. I want to know who did that!"
A few hours later, a secret service agent comes into the oval office with some files and says:
"Mr. President, we have the results of the tests, and I'm sorry to say, it's the Vice Presidents urine."
Outraged, Bill demands the Vice President be brought into the office. But the secret service agent interrupts him saying:
"But sir, thats not all. It's Hillary's hand-writing"

A problem from a Biblical perspective: If there is other life in the universe, they were affected by the 'curse' (2nd law of Thermodynamics) when Adam and Eve screwed up in the garden. So even though the inhabitants of other far away places didn't do anything wrong, they still suffer the consequences of what happened here on earth, as the 2nd law is universal. Doesn't seem just or consistent with the Creator (IMO).
As to water in the universe, a careful reading of Genesis says that the whole universe was made out of water - so no surprise that there would be water interspersed throughout. For more about that, read Dr. Russell Humphrey's little book "Starlight and Time", meant as a basic introduction to his concepts (much of it is in layman's terms). There was much heated discussion in the Technical Journals after his book came out. Dr. Humphreys is a creationist. He also has worked on national particle acceleration projects and has several patents.
I've heard Dr. Hoagland speak on Coast to Coast overnight several times. He's quite entertaining, and it's "fun" to imagine that there are giant structures on the Moon and Mars. Now he's pushed it out further to Jupiter's satellites. I wonder if that's because after closer scrutiny, there doesn't appear to be any massive structures on the Moon, as he once claimed as fact in OMNI magazine (defunct science mag I used to read).
What if there WERE some structures on the moon and Mars and even out at Jupiter? My suspicion would be that the travelers came from Earth! The Earth suffered a great catastrophe that wiped out past knowledge, destroying evidence of advanced cultures long ago. Wild speculation? No more wild (I'd say less actually) than saying there's life out there, somewhere, in deep space. Even with billions of stars and galaxies, the odds of life happening in such a place as earth are still incredibly remote, because of all the conditions necessary (that must be exactly right) for life to happen.
OK, I'll shadddupp. I'm still new to this forum.
