Hackers get Windows XP on Apple computers
By MAY WONG
AP Technology Writer

SAN JOSE, Calif. — As expected, hackers have found a way to run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP operating system on new Macintosh computers, winning an ad hoc contest and a $13,854 cash prize to boot.

Or, make that dual-boot - the way to make a computer switch between two operating systems.

Some users of Apple Computer Inc.'s Macs have clamored for such a solution since Apple said it would be switching its computers to Intel Corp.'s chips, putting the feat within reach.

Their reasons vary, but a common denominator is that they would like to run Windows-based programs on their Macs.

Colin Nederkoorn, a shipping broker in Houston, says he just wants to streamline his work: instead of using his Apple PowerBook computer for some programs and a Windows PC for other tasks, he'd like to just use one machine.

That's why Nederkoorn, 23, started a contest back in January to goad programmers, soliciting donations for a cash prize for anyone who came up with a hack.

Late Thursday, the prize went to two San Francisco Bay Area software developers, Jesus Lopez, 33, of Alameda, and Eric Wasserman, 41, of Berkeley.

Apple has its 'niche' market but Window$ rulz!

For me I'm an Intel person, not an AMD type, Window$ type, but like the Linux OS's (just need a pc to play with the various Linux OS's I have) prefer Unix over anything else when it comes to secure server-side OS.

Took a class in Apple Macs and HATED em, lol sorry just isnt My kind of puter, but they're funky lookin and can do some really good graphics programs, but other than that I prefer versatility.

Kinda interestin these kids got Windows on an Apple puter LOL quite.... creative.

I have never quite understood the argument about Mac's being any better at animation and graphical work than a home brewed windows PC. I use Windows on my computer I built myself which I setup mainly for gaming (though it has no issues with rendering in 3DS max or working on billboard sized graphics in Illustrator). I worked with a similar 3D program on a G5 and it was a lot slower. I went to lunch and came back and it still hadn't finished rendering, whereas on my computer here, it would be done in 20 mins. (Running an AMD 64-bit x2 3500 clocked to 3800... needless to say it gets a little toasty in my box, but thats ok).

As far as I am concerned, Mac is just a washed up has-been. Their only claim to fame is the iPod, which, I hope in times to come, will fade out. It's such a fashion fad. People will get tired of trying to be "cool" by getting an iPod. Let's face it, Creative makes a kick ass Mp3 player that hold 60 gigs for half the price of the 30 gig ipod.... You are simply paying to be in the club.

I just wish an alternative would come for windows that has the versatility. Sure, linux is nice, but it will never take off and be a rival to windows. While this may not affect Joe Blow who buys his computer from Dell, but people like me are going to have to pay to activate windows when Vista comes out. Yes, we will no longer be able to log on the internet and activate it for free, we will have to call MS up and pay money per minute to activate our copy of windows... Meaning basically no more free format-and-install routines.

This is a way for Mac enthusiasts to finally own a Windows PC w/o actually having to buy one.

uhhh Mac's are Infinitely More expensive than a PC, so if they can afford a MacIntosh I am very certain they can easily afford a PC.

Sheeeesh then again to pay out the nose for something like this would be abit moot as well wouldnt it?

(Clark college will prolly resurrect their networking class for macs and add it to Windows now that this has been done)

I remember reading Apple's website where they boast the top 10 reasons to own a Mac. One of them was the lack of system crashes.

I searched their knowledgebase for OS X and found articles on how to deal with system crashes. ;)

The major reason for bloatware in operating systems is the need to write them to compensate for every possible thing that clueless newbies can do to them. Imagine how much leaner and meaner they could be if it weren't necessary to try to anticipate every stupid thing that idiots can do.

My suggestion would be a single error routine that goes to a blue screen and displays in large letters:

Your incompetence has just resulted in a fatal system crash.
You will lose everything you have done since you booted up.
Tough schitte! Maybe next time you'll be more careful, moron.

Have a nice day!

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

After all is said and done, the question is, "Why?" One can buy a Wintel computer for at least a kilobuck less than a Mac, and its runs Windows natively. This seems to be one of those "because it's there" things.

I gotta say the Win XP is the most stable OS that I've used to date. If I could just get that stability in some of the programs ...
