China calls "one-child policy" a success. (http://story.hongkongherald.com/p.x/ct/9/id/e6288a609fed66c3/cid/9366300fc9319e9b/)

What a success. There are millions of single men and not enough women. The only way to alleviate the situation is to send them off to war. Any ideas who they would like to fight?

The goal of ensuring Chinese people a relatively comfortable life... --from the link posted by ThomasMore
Not by murdering babies, but by killing the self-proclaimed elite masters who think they know what's best for China.

Chinese society still values men and devalues women. Since parents only get one shot, when women get pregnant, they seek out an ultrasound. If it's a girl, many times that means an abortion, so they still get their "one shot". I have read that the current generation coming up is about 70% male. (Sorry, no source to point to.)
A population that's 70% male? Now THAT speaks to stability. 700 million Chinese guys looking for some, and none to be had. Testosterone all over the place. A recipe for stability second only to prisons.
I can't WAIT to see how stable China is in 20 years.

On another note, when I flight-instructed in Florida, we had a number of Chinese students. Each was the product of the "one child" policy, and very few wanted to become pilots. Many were interested in computer programming or engineering, but none had their choice. Th government assigned their career paths.
They received only the bare minimum of training and ratings, then went off to get "type rated" in airliners and sent back to China with very little real-world experience. When I became a flight instructor in small airplanes (Cessnas and Pipers), I had double the experience that the Chinese guys did when they got sent back to fly 747s and A-340's. By the time I got hired by a regional airline here, I had doubled that experience again -- and I was considered pretty green for the airlines. The Chinese government was putting extraordinarily inexperienced pilots in the front of some of their largest airliners.
Finally, one of the students was killed in a bicycle accident (hit by a truck). The parents were devastated, not only by the loss of their son, but also because of the one-child policy and their age, by the dying out of their family line.

Russia. Maybe India, who has the same problem with too many males.

If I were China's government, I would be preparing for war with the US. Only the US has the power to thwart China now. The Europeans have lost the moral fiber and martial culture to deal with China.
Although Russia and China are cozying up, China could use some Lebensraum to the north. Russia is disorganized and resource rich but population poor in Siberia. The Russian military is broken.
As for India, I don't see why China would want to waste its time, except to intimidate India. Why should China add to its population problem?

China has ample Lebensraum within its own borders. The population clusters around the major port cities since most of the country is desert.

Yes. That would be a good way to cut China's population in half or more. After that, China would destroy itself from within.

As long as we have a government with backbone (like today) China would be foolhardy to try. Another Clinton administration, and I am not so sure.
I worry deeply for our public's willingness to stand for anything and fight. I am not talking about us on this board; I am speaking about the "Jerry Springer" crowd and those who listen to Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan. I see too many of 'em.

The Chinese are the most fecund on earth. I can only imagine what China would look like if the were allowed to reproduce at will. I can only imagine what the leaders of China thought China would look like if the population were not required to reduce the number of children. When they instituted this policy China was in danger of propagating itself into disaster, famine, internal war or external war. China would not have survived uncontrolled population growth.
Mao Tse Tung saw a China billowing with humanity and took drastic action to protect a few, just a few. It was a horrendous, cruel and inhuman act called the Great Leap Forward. A government managed countrywide famine killed millions and millions. It allowed China to survive.
The one child policy is awful, terrible, horrible, it's any kind of evil you want to call it. I don't know what else China could do to stop its cancerous growth.

Onliest cause of famine in this day and age is government. Don't matter how many people there are. If the govt stays out of the marketplace, all will be fed with no problem.

The famine was to kill them. There was plenty of food. China produces enough food to feed itself. The government induced and managed the famine to reduce the population.
China looks at itself and then imagines itself with 400 more people. No wonder they call it a success.

China, a country I know is predominantly Buddhist, is starting to sound like an Arab culture. You know, devaluing women to the point of stopping girls from being born. I'm curious what Confucious might say about it if he were still around.
The way I see it, China will become a country that can't reproduce because it is all men. We won't need a war to wipe them out, they will do a fair job of it themselves.

Don't count on it. They will simply buy women. They will buy women kidnapped from all over the world. They will do what men have always done.

Those rich, powerful and connected will do just that. Most of the 400 million won't have the ability to.

What a shame. Really. It's a Hobson's Choice. The people propagate themselves into a situation where the entire society is threatened. They cannot or will not limit their family size dooming everyone. Or, the government must do it for them, in predicably heavy handed govenment ways. China's population has always been the biggest reason they could not progress. I honestly cannot say that what the government is doing is entirely wrong. Morally it is. Humanely it is. It is in so many ways. Yet, the alternatives just weren't and still aren't available. After all, China could not simply give 400 million babies away. Which would be a human rights violation in and of itself.
