Aruban Police Make Arrest in Holloway Case

<!-- END HEADLINE --><!-- BEGIN STORY BODY --> By MARGARET WEVER, Associated Press Writer 29 minutes ago

Authorities have made an arrest in the case of a young Alabama woman who disappeared while vacationing in Aruba, an Aruban official said Saturday.
Mariaine Croes, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office, said Aruban authorities were not prepared to disclose why the person was arrested. Croes also would not say how the arrest was linked to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway nearly a year ago, on the final night of her high school graduation trip to the Dutch Caribbean island.
Croes would only say that the person who was arrested is 19 and has the initials "G.V.C." In Aruba, when an arrest is announced, officials usually release only a suspect's initials, and not a full name.

So it can't be any of the original suspects.

Lawyer: Holloway Suspect, Van Der Sloot Not Acquaintances

Monday, April 17, 2006
Associated Press

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — A lawyer for a Dutch youth detained previously as a suspect in the disappearance of teenager Natalee Holloway said Monday that his client did not know the latest person arrested by Aruban authorities in the case.

Joseph Tacopina, a U.S. lawyer for Joran van der Sloot, said the detention of a person identified as 19-year-old Geoffrey van Cromvoirt was good news for his client because it suggested the investigation was heading in a new direction.

"My client doesn't know him at all," Tacopina said in an interview with The Associated Press. "He just doesn't know him, period."

The detainee's name has been reported by some media outlets in varying forms, but Aruban authorities decline to confirm his identity.

Tacopina, who said his investigators had been in contact with Aruban authorities, said Cromvoirt was detained because police recovered a T-shirt belonging to him with "relevant forensic information" from the south side of the Dutch Caribbean island.........http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,191982,00.html

Forensic evidence on a T-shirt a year after the crime occurred? Geez, I was a bachelor for 30+ years and even I did my laundry at least on a quarterly basis... The jerk deserves to be arrested just on filthiness alone...

I guess this means that Greta Van Susteren has something to report for the rest of the year.

Maybe he left the shirt somewhere near where whatever happened to her. I would hope it wasn't at home in his hamper unwashed all this time... but you never know. :gag:

Anyone else getting the impression that her family wants these guys to be guilty so much that they don't even want to look at any other possibility? You would think they would want the GUILTY person to pay for it.

I have wondered about that a few times.

I think it was Greta's show where they mentioned there was an image on the hotel tape that was captured after 3 AM of a girl who looked like Natalee and appeared to be wearing the same clothes. And when they showed it to the mother she first said she thought it was her until they told her the time then she was sure it wasn't her. Because After 3 AM they have records that show the original 3 suspects online at that time. And if that WAS her they couldn't have killed her, so she wouldn't accept that it could have been her alive at that time.

Greta said others who have viewed the tape think it looks like her profile, hair and the shape of her nose. And unless she bought those clothes on the trip, how likely is it for anyone else to have what she was wearing and wear it at her hotel the night she dissappeared?

I can't find the transcript from where she refers to the person that was on "the other night" which is what I saw. But this is the best I can do as a source for what I am talking about.

VAN SUSTEREN: Well, the other night on our show, Julia Renfro said that she had seen a video at about 3:00 o'clock in the morning at the Holiday Inn, very grainy, that it could have been — she didn't know for sure — could have been Natalee, that Beth Holloway Twitty (javascript:siteSearch('Beth Holloway Twitty');) has looked at it and said she does not think it's Natalee. But my question was whether the tape had ever been turned over to professionals for enhancement, so we could sort of put that one to rest? Do you know anything about this video?

Geoffrey van Cromvoirt.

On May 30 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_30), immediately following her missed flight, Natalee's stepfather and mother, Jug and Beth Twitty, traveled to Aruba with friends by private jet. Within four hours of landing in Aruba the Twittys and others went to the Aruban police with Van der Sloot's name and address, as the person last known to be seen with their daughter. Accompanied by two Aruban policemen, they went to the Van der Sloot home looking for Natalee.
(from wikipedia)

Perhaps its me, but it always struck me as somewhat odd that the Twitty's came to the Aruban police with the name and adress of the Van der Sloots in their pocket the very day after Natalee missed her flight. Were they previously aware of Natalee's acquaintance with these people? Perhaps they just heard about them from other kids there, but it all seems rather quickly.

It does seem strange.
