OK, guys, I have a new headache.

My pc came with a WIN-DVD 5 DVD player. I upgraded it to WIN-DVD 7 Platinum. After deleting the #5 and installing the #7, upon opening I keep getting an error. "Cannot find WNASPI32.dll." Any ideas? How can I re-insert this missing file into the DVD program file?

Thanks much,

Pendragon

If you're using Windows XP, unzip the attached file and move the WNASPI32.dll file to Windows/System32, and see if that cures it. Note: it works only with Windows NT, 2000 or XP, not with 9x-based versions.

The file could probably be retrieved from the installation disk that came with pc.

If it's XP, it isn't included. IAC, the installation disks are usually compressed files that are not easily explored.

Thanks guys. Doc, I'm giving your solution a try. Will let you know if it's fixed.

Doc:

I unzipped the file you provided and moved it into System 32. Computer says it still can't find it when DVD 7 is opened. I deleted DVD7, re-installed it, but no luck. Maybe I'm not doing it right. Thanks anyway.

Maybe it's looking for it in the DVD 7 main folder where the actual program is. Try it there. It's a fairly common approach. If that doesn't help, it's go-to-the-source time.

First, here's the WINDVD FAQ.

Home > Product Support > WinDVD (http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/Faq.jsp?product=WinDVD)

It tells you what has to be installed on the box for it to work. If no joy ...

Home > Support > Customer Service (http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/Support.jsp?mode=Customer)

Doc:

I got the error window to go away, but when the DVD opens it won't play. :bdh:

If you bought it, Inter-Video should support it. Based on further searches, there is more than one version of WNASPI32.DLL, and there are a couple of other related files. Welcome to DLL hell.

If Inter-Video is no help, dump the sumbich and use PowerDVD. I've used it since Win98 without a hiccup.

Where can I find PowerDVD? I've looked at Circuit City, Staples, and Wal-mart.

Here's the CyberLink page for it.

CyberLink PowerDVD (http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/cyberstore/order_1_enu.html)

It's available in different flavors. Typically it's a download rather than a boxed product, but both are available. Note: if you search, avoid PowerDVD Platinum from Avanquest. It's a ripoff. There is no such product from Cyberlink.

Actually, Windows Media Player can do DVDs, although it's more limited than the special-purpose software. Fetch WMP 10 for the latest technology.

There is also CinePlayer (http://www.sonic.com/products/Consumer/play.aspx?o_src=http://www.cineplayer.com/), although I know nothing about it. InterActual (http://www.interactual.com/) (quite a few DVDs try to install it) is an enhancer for other programs rather than a stand-alone player.
