(AP) -- If the government doesn't build security fencing along the Mexico border, Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox says he and his supporters will.

Simcox, whose civilian watch group opposes illegal immigration, said Wednesday he was sending an ultimatum to President Bush to deploy military reserves to the Arizona border by May 25 or his supporters will break ground for their own building project.

"We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise," Simcox said.

They might want to be packing some heat. I would be willing to bet that shots will be fired from the other side of the border during the building. Great idea though, I hope enough landowners participate.

Noble causes deserve such things.I despise activism - always have... But by God, these people are patriots IMO... They have always operated within the law... They have behaved above and beyond even the slightest reproach all the while being falsely accused of vigilanteism from their own President...

I like this recent idea... If volunteer citizens patrolling the border isnt enough to embarrass Bush into doing his duty, then turn up the heat... I love this fence project... I might have to send them a contribution for materials...

So the Minutemen, those xenophobic, border-patrolling vigilantes, have decided to give the federal government an ultimatum. Not only that, but leader Chris Simcox claims to have already lined up promises of land in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas.

While my initial reaction was, and still is, continued amazement as to the audacity of these self-styled patriots (http://hughesforamerica.typepad.com/hughes_for_america/2005/06/nationalism_is_.html), I think there's a very important lesson to be learned here. With that in mind, I'm suggesting we treat this threat differently than others coming before it.

I say we let them build it.

Nothing would amuse me more than the sight of sunburnt, worn-out, possibly out-of-shape, middle-aged Minutemen broiling in the hot southern sun. Temperatures soaring higher than the highest bald eagle. White faces turning redder than the reddest of Old Glory's stripes. Back-breaking labor much more difficult than sitting in the back of a pick-up truck with a rifle in one hand an a cold one in the other. To me, it's a star-spangled (http://hughesforamerica.typepad.com/hughes_for_america/2006/04/mexican_flag_hy.html) dream sequence right out of that terrible Lee Greenwood song.

Unfortunately they'll embarrass Bush to do something, only it wont be what they expect him to do, Bush will probably mobilize to hinder, halt, incarcerate any who tries to put up a fence without his express permission, private-property-wise or not.

As you have noticed in the past Bush has repeatedly called these Minutemen 'Vigilantes' and lawless types.

He, I am sure wont stoop to putting a stop to any grass-roots rebellion via fence-raising.

Cant have the peons doing what the Govt should be doing and what the Govt is tasked to do as per their Oaths of office demands they do.... Protect and defend the people and the American Constitution.

Cant have that, no.

But I doubt Bush will be embarassed ... unless he's as embarassed as he was about the Chinese woman yelling at the Chicom dictator, and takes the Minutemen to court, or something.

And unless he has a political death wish (which will be extended to the GOP), I would strongly advise against taking such action.

Evidently there are laws (remember those) preventing the building of a fence such as that proposed.

The illegals are crossing illegally and trespassing on private property illegally, to stop them is illegal in and of itself.

Maybe the laws governing the building of fences is what should be disobeyed.

Private property owners have rights under the constitution to build a fence or wall on their own property. And if it is not the government, then they cannot blame the U.S. government but have to blame the landowners. This is better than that send a brick idea. I think the petition makes good sense as well.

What makes you hate America first idiots think that they would work during the day, ever heard of flood lights? The Desert gets very cool at night, bet they might even need some flannel shirts.

I'm trying to recall the name of the fella (the Driveby Media seems to adore the guy) who is the senator from Arizona...and who teamed up with Democrat Ted Kennedy to sponsor a lax-on-illegal alliens immigration "reform" legislation bill. Which (thankfully) the Republicans in the Senate killed, even though the majority of Democrats supported the legislation.

The guy's name was "McVain" or something like that.....

But hey, easier for the Associated Press to try to blame Bush, once again, eh? Wouldn't want to draw a negative association to Ted Kennedy and the Democrats and the friend-of-Democrats McVain on this one, would we now, eh Associated Press?
