CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.

If it could've, the state might have paddled a school official in east Tennessee who canceled classes for two days as a way to save money on bus fuel.

Instead, Rhea County superintendent Dallas Smith has been ordered to reschedule the missed days, which the state Department of Education says it did not approve.

...

School board Chairman Harold "Bimbo" McCawley has said the two-day closing was justified. He said the superintendent "made a decision to try to save some money for the taxpayers ... I think it was a wise decision."
