That does it! Next time I go jogging at night in Florida, I'm taking my decoy chicken along to lure alligators away from me!

Well it is the peak of gator mating season, which may really be why she was attacked. We have gators around all the time and for the most part they are very afraid of people, except in mating season when they tend to become more aggressive. When I see one while I'm fishing on the banks they take off when you get within 15 feet of them, as long as I dont have my dog with me, then its totaly different. Gators love dogs.
Gator Country
There's a gator in the bushes, he's calling my name,
And a saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There's many roads I've travelled but they all kind of look the same.
There's a gator in the bushes, Lord, he calling my name.

The gator tried to mate with your dog?
What would happen if a gator saw a liberal female Democrat (Helen Thomas, Cindy Sheehan, Hillary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi, Barbra Streisand, etc.) during mating season?
What if the gator were homosexual (or female) and saw James Carville?

HS it was for you.
Back in the mid 80's I was out plinkin with my 10/22 and shotgun in a canal west of here, before it became built out. My German Shepard would go swimming all the time while we were shooting. One time while my dog was swimming back to me a pair of eyes popped up behind her and started gaining on her. I called for my dog loudly which only confused her and she slowed down instead of picking it up.
Well the three of us, well anyway as a result of it, the dog made it back but it was close. You should have seen that dog when we "scared off" the gator, she didn't know what to think and swam around all afraid of the noise we made.

Had a close call like that too. There's a place near us locals refer to as Watermelon Pond. Many a pooch has not made it back to shore -- we'll take ours down to the river (Suwannee), but NEVER to a lake.

UPDATE
``It is my professional opinion that the alligator attacked the woman while she was on land,'' said Dr. Joshua Perper, Broward County's medical examiner. ``She died of traumatic injuries sustained by an alligator attack, a mixture of blood loss and shock, and in my opinion died very fast.''

Sad.
Not to be a Cliff Claven, but the last paragraph is not true. For the most part the water in the glades is still up. Fires out there are on the islands. They burn every year. We were out there last weekend. Dig a foot or so down and its muck still.
And you guys think alligators are bad, thank your lucky stars they arent Crocs!!
Crocodiles are WORSE, I heard crocs will come right up out of the water and grab women who are washing clothes on the Nile river, or out of boats without hesitation or fear.

Many a pooch has not made it back to shoreI can offer humane solution - throw chihuahuas to the critters. I always knew there was some reason those bug-eyed rats were bred.

The gator would just think it was The Creature From the Black Lagoon. (What I have called old Serpent Head for years).

Awww 'Boat, not ALL them chi-hooa-hooas are bad hun. We have a sweet one that lives next door, he's like an adopted family member. We fixed a little place in the fence (between our houses) that he can get through cause the neighbor keeps him ouside during the day. He comes to our house for the day and plays with our poochies (we practically have a doggie-daycare at our house, LOL). His name is "Pork Chop", :smirky: , and he's such a sweet loving pup. He's a miniature chihuahua. (Got a pic, if you ever wanna see him.)

He's a miniature chihuahua.
Isn't that like a miniature flea? Even "regular" chihuahuas are not very big, IMHO.

Even "regular" chihuahuas are not very big, IMHO.That's why Boat used the plural when he advocated feeding them to crocs. It takes quite a few of the little suckers to satisfy a croc.

Wildlife officers captured an alligator Saturday they believe was responsible for fatally attacking a woman while she was out jogging.
The 9-foot, 6-inch alligator was trapped just under the bridge where Yovy Suarez Jimenez, 28, was last seen, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.
