PORT SALERNO -- A cop's worst nightmare came true for a veteran deputy on a traffic stop in the Thursday morning darkness when the motorist allegedly got out and started shooting an AK-47 assault rifle.

Martin County Sheriff's Office Deputy Dale Howard was hit once in the arm about 1:16 a.m. on 45th Avenue, and he was flown to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach where he was expected to recover.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I play ball with this guy, big tough dude, glad he's Ok.
The local rats will have a great time with this one though. One of the very few times an AK or any type of military weapon has been used in a crime. Watch and see how his sentencing goes and how much time he gets.
And yea again they call them assualt rifles.

From The Article:
"The records show Sims was convicted of misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence and received three days in jail in 2002. He was convicted of violation of probation or community control in 2003 and was sentenced to a month in jail. Sims was also convicted of failure to appear at a court hearing the same year."

Wouldn't this preclude him obtaining the "AK-47 assault rifle" legally? If he didn't (obtain it legally) there should be no uproar over owning them legally because it wasn't a legally owned weapon when used. If he DID own it legally, there IS something wrong with the system that a convicted individual was allowed to purchase a weapon to begin with (regardless of it being an AK-47).

....there should be no uproar over owning them legally because it wasn't a legally owned weapon when used.Yeah. Dream on.

....there IS something wrong with the system that a convicted individual was allowed to purchase a weapon to begin with....Depends on if he was convicted of a felony. Most places don't deny gun rights for misdemeanors, unless they're domestic violence.

Allowed! Allowed to purchase such a weapon.

He bought it off someone who just smuggled it in across the border. There is no such thing as allowing.
