I basically agree with Mayor Bloomberg. Cell phones are inappropriate and should not be brought to school. But I will slightly amend that, and not because of the tempest in a teapot that is being whipped up by students, teachers and the head of the teachers union, Randi Weingarten.

I can understand the parents who have submitted to the wishes of their children because one of the reasons American kids are so obnoxious is that their parents give them the mistaken impression they have equal say in too many things that should be solely decided by adults. One can neither be surprised by the position of certain teachers nor of Weingarten. The union is in need of something that will allow its members to bond with the children against the mayor, who has taken the unforgivable position that teachers could do a much better job than they have been.

Teacher of the Year is a silly charade everywhere. A kid nominates a teacher, all the nominees' names get put in a hat and somebody draws a name outta the hat. Some version of that is how it happens, and it has little or nothing to do with teaching excellence.
