Texas teenager dies of rabies from bat bite

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas teenager who was bitten by a bat while he slept in his home has died of rabies, the Houston hospital that treated him said in a statement.

Zachary Jones, 16, died on Friday, a week after he became ill from the bat bite he received about a month before.

The article isn't very clear. It said he did not realize he had been bitten, but with an infected bite, within a months time, there had to be SOME indication of a bite. And any sane person, not having the animal so it can be tested for rabies, would go to the hospital to begin the rabies shots.

A vampire bat has two chemicals in its saliva. One keeps the blood from clotting, and the other numbs the skin until the bat finishes lapping the blood.

Darn shame. I read the same article. Three people died from rabies in the United States in one year. The odds are very much with you if you're betting against death from rabies.
