Pay, not jobs, lures Mexicans

Contrary to popular belief, Mexico has no incentive to encourage illegal immigration to the United States, says Fernando Sanchez Ugarte, Consul General of Mexico in Portland.

In fact, he said, the mass departure of able-bodied workers and the $12 billion that Mexican immigrants send back to their communities each year ultimately hurt the economic and social fabric of the country.

Sanchez, a University of Chicago-trained economist, turned the tables of the illegal immigration debate at a small gathering of the World Affairs Council earlier this week. His talk mixed academic analysis with broader social appeals.

This is good propaganda for Vincente Fox and for the mexican govt pushing its citizens upon the US, as this ass is trying to make like the mexicans swamping America is hurting Mexico, which is an outright lie.

Sorry but Mexico has a HUGE lot to gain from encouraging its restless poor to move into America, they dont have to deal with the poor trying to overturn the rich, entrenched mainly white mexican govt and they dont have to worry bout disgruntled Mexican peasants trying to gain jobs that are off limits to them due to the corruption there, with the well-connected get only for themselves and their families, they dont want the status quo to change, they like it as it is and dont want anything upsetting the applecart, and having tons of Mexicans in America sending millions of American money back to mexico helps them keep their power and keep a locked lid on the appropriate jobs they keep for their own only.

He needs to show proof of how it hurts the Mexican economy, as much of what the Mexican illegals in America make go straight to mexico, so I dont see how its hurting anyone in Mexico, but helping the entrenched autocratic elites in Mexico keep their cushy jobs, and keep the monopoly of giving special good paying jobs to their family members and well-connected only to their own.

Unskilled workers in Mexico earn about $2.50 an hour, including fringe benefits, he said. Most Mexican immigrants in Oregon make about $10 an hour. Although the government has been developing the rural economy and improving education access, it will be decades before wages for unskilled work catch up to the United States.


In Oregon thats Well above the MINIMUM wage offered in Oregon, and ANY unskilled laborer earns Minimum wage, 10/hr is for Skilled Laborers, NOT Unskilled.
This guy dont get it, no farm or business that hires illegals will EVER pay that kind of wage thats Over the Oregon Minimum wage for Unskilled laborers whatsoever.

It's a myth, he said, that the Mexican government encourages emigration to rid the country of the poor.


The Mexican Govt stands to gain from all the money being sent south of the border by Mexican workers here in America, this is nothing but lies and obfuscation of the true facts here as to why Mexicans cross the Mexican/U.S. Border, this guy is propagating myths here with his 'lectures', myths and lies.

Mexico encourages this illegal border invasion and has given pamphlets, handouts, aid kits and more help than any other govt in the world to its citizens with the incentive to cross over and grab American jobs in order to gain the $$$ from their mexican citizens in America sending all that money back to em as well as the assurance they keep a pacified populace by keeping them out of their hair.

Beo if we Americans lower our wages this country will go down the financial tubes and a depression will result from it that'll destroy America as a nation.

As it is these illegals are being paid well below the mandated Minimum wages that the govt forces every legit businesses set for American citizens.

By lowering it, we run the risk of re-opening up the sweatshops of old with their horrid conditions and little or no wages.

As it is with the heavy taxation of the American citizen and the rising cost of living and bills its Absolutely impossible for Americans to compete with such wages.

It isnt a matter of jobs Americans 'dont' want to do, its a matter of jobs Americans cannot afford to do because of the increasing financial burdens being placed on the backs of the American citizens to help bankroll the millions of illegals in America and the rest of the world.
