La. governor to summon National Guard <!-- END HEADLINE -->

Acting at the mayor's request, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Monday she would send National Guard troops and state police to patrol the streets of New Orleans after a bloody weekend in which six people were killed.
"The senseless slaying of five teenagers this weekend is shocking," Blanco said in a statement. "Things like this should never happen, and I am going to do all I can to stop it."
The governor did not specify how many troops and officers she planned to deploy. Earlier Monday, Mayor Ray Nagin asked for as many as 300 National Guardsmen and 60 state police officers. I'm sorry, my eyes must be going bad. She's going to do WHAT with WHO?? Do they not have more than 60 State Troopers in Lousianna? This woman is out of her mind. Someone needs to sit down with her and review what the Guard is.
Before a storm that could kill half the people in one of your largest cities and you need help getting them out ... yes call up the Guard. But did she ... NO.
Thugs roaming the streets breaking the law ... State Police ... yes.
National Guard ... NO. but does she call them up for police work .... YES. Idiot.

Since when are the National Guard needed to take care of everyday crime?

Since it's New Orleans?

Never. And even if they find the punks doing this they can't do anything to them. 5 people were killed, sad ... but not exactly a national emergency.

Poor Little Naggin' Nagin. Guess the oompa loompas in his "chocolate city" are getting out of hand and Blanco had no choice.

Smart move, Ray and Blanco. Bring the National Guard in as targets. Knowing your platform, you won't allow them to be armed and if they are, they will be scrutinized for killing a thug.

Sure she did. That's why they have STATE POLICE. It's a big state, they have to have more than 60 patrol officers.

I know she had other choices, Suze, I was being a little sarcastic. There is no reason to be calling the NG to take care of street crime.

Given the past history, I'm surprised Nagin called Blanco. It seems more likely that he would have called the President and asked for help.
And Beo is right, the NG troops will be sitting ducks.
I guess Nagin's police force are all still over in Houston, commiting crime.

Apparently SHE doesn't know she has other choices though. Seems like when ever she has choices she makes the wrong one.

Oh yeah, I forgot one thing regarding crime.
Maybe, just maybe, if the Nagin's, the Blanco's and other Dummycrats of the world would start holding people accountable instead of using excuses like, "He had a bad bringing," and "mentally incompetant," they could reduce crime.

I am afraid this might be a Democrat ploy to say that Bush is using the Guard for law enforcement on the border since the Mexicans coming in aren't an invading force they are just breaking the law by coming in illegally. We shall see I suppose, but this has a democrat ploy stink to it. If not I guess she just really is that stupid.

OK, everyone is operating true to character here;
Nagin; still has no plan or solutions, only whining that someone needs to fix this problem. Someone needs to school him on the definiton of leadership.
Blanco; still has no idea what the Ng s for, fails to use thwm when they are needed in a national emergency, but feels they can help out the cops to stop street crime.
I am going to be honestly cruel here and satate the obvious; The people of New Orleans are getting the kind of government that they voted for.

And I might add, ED, the same mentality and ilk that sent Marion Berry back to the mayorship in DC, sent Nagin back to the mayorship of New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS (June 20) - Acting at the mayor's request, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Monday she would send National Guard troops and state police to patrol the streets of New Orleans after a bloody weekend in which six people were killed.
"The situation is urgent," Blanco said. "Things like this should never happen, and I am going to do all I can to stop it."
One hundred National Guardsmen with law enforcement experience and 60 state police officers were to be sent to the city Tuesday. Up to 200 more troops would be deployed after that, said Denise Bottcher, the governor's spokeswoman.
Earlier Monday, Mayor Ray Nagin had asked for as many as 300 National Guardsmen and 60 state police officers.
It was the first time the National Guard has been used for law enforcement in the United States since the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Nagin had sought the troops after five teenagers in an SUV were shot and killed in the city's deadliest attack in at least 11 years. Police said the attack was apparently motivated by drugs or revenge. Also, a man was stabbed to death Sunday night in an argument over beer.
"Today is a day when New Orleanians are stepping up. We've had enough," Nagin said. "This is our line in the sand. We're saying we're not going any further."
Nagin said he would not allow criminals to take over when the city is still trying to recover from the hurricane. The mayor said troops should be posted in heavily flooded neighborhoods to free police to concentrate on hot spots elsewhere.
Community leaders have raised fears that the violence could discourage people from moving back to New Orleans.

When Nagin declared Nuh Worlenz a Chocolate City, I guess he meant the kind with nuts in it.

Where's the suprise in this? Liberals have never had the slightest idea what a military is for... And from my observations they have always used the Military for "police actions", not to mention catering services...

Using state troops to control looting after a disaster is not at all extraordinary. That's the only proper use of the Guard for cop work that I know of. The Guard, as the regular Army, isn't trained for cop work.

It is disgusting that this guys entire campaign was that he was the only black guy in the race. And even though the other candidate was just as liberal, he would not look out for blacks because he is not one.
What ever happenned to the level playing field, and the color-blind society?

You would think since their police force is just a very slight amount lower than it was before Katrina. The police force is down to about 1,375 officers, compared with about 1,750 before Katrina. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060620/ap_on_re_us/new_orleans_national_guard;_ylt=AiPXXU1mIAxrTg_XQp sYDRWs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ--)And they have less residents because of all that relocated. You would think they could get their act together enough to police their own city. How long are we supposed to keep this mostly destroyed area on "emergency" status? There comes a time when starting over new is refered to as rebuilding, not a national emergency.

The Guard, as the regular Army, isn't trained for cop work.I agree with that position when a disaster is current... Seems to me though that the Dems are substantially slower than usual in responding to Katrina if they are only now calling out the National Guard - afterall the hurricane occurred last year...
I think Sooz has a good point - the whole thing stinks... At best it just demonstrates the utter complete incompetence of the state officials in Louisiana...
