Former Energy Secretary Opposes Bush Proposal to Dismantle Worker Safety Agency

Wednesday, June 21, 2006

WASHINGTON — A Bush administration proposal to rework an Energy Department agency that oversees nuclear and worker safety has run into opposition from a former energy secretary and others.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who was Energy Secretary in the Clinton administration, sent a letter to current Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman this week criticizing the proposal to merge the Office of Environment Safety and Health with other DOE agencies.

"The DOE plan downgrades and weakens safety and health protections," Richardson wrote. Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire also signed the letter. Both have large Energy Department nuclear facilities in their states.

"Given the absence of any external studies demonstrating that this office is dysfunctional or ineffective, there appears to be no compelling reason to reduce or change its function," the letter said.......http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,200489,00.html

" . . . "Given the absence of any external studies demonstrating that this office is dysfunctional or ineffective . . . "

Anyone with one eye and half sense knows that most government agencies are dysfunctional and ineffective.

Bodman Opposes Bush Proposal

Is it current Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman who is opposing the proposal, or New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who was Energy Secretary in the Clinton administration? Maybe I'm reading the article wrong.

As with most news stories these days, the story is misleading and provides insufficient info for the reader to come to a conclusion... Exactly what is the nature of these proposed change... It may indeed be a bad move or it may be much-needed reduction of government red tape... Who knows - not us... Not the consumer...

The media is only interested in reporting controversy... They are interested only in shock value...

Don't feel like the lone stranger on that one! :D I read it as if Richardson initiated the whole thing and they are going along with it. Maybe I'm reading it wrong too???

No. It's my senility again. I corrected the thread title.

Richardson is making a bid for the second spot on the Dem '08 ticket. Look for him to "oppose more" as he makes himslef more and more vocal and visible to get himself noticed by the Soros/Moore Wing of the party.

I'm divided in thought as to whether '08 is going to be a good time for someone of Richardson's ethnic heritage to run.

On the one hand, with enough illegal Mexicans voting, Richardson might carry the Dem ticket; on the other hand, with white conservatives up in arms over illegals streaming across the border, Richardson might sink the ticket.

That is . . . if you could get the lazy white people up off their duffs and get them out to vote.
