Gorey Truths: 25 inconvenient truths for Al Gore (http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=YmFiZDAyMWFhMGIxNTgwNGIyMjVkZjQ4OGFiZjFlNjc=)

With An Inconvenient Truth, the companion book to former Vice President Al Gore’s global-warming movie, currently number nine in Amazon sales rank, this is a good time to point out that the book, which is a largely pictorial representation of the movie’s graphical presentation, exaggerates the evidence surrounding global warming. Ironically, the former Vice President leaves out many truths that are inconvenient for his argument. Here are just 25 of them.

1. Carbon Dioxide’s Effect on Temperature. The relationship between global temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2), on which the entire scare is founded, is not linear (http://motls.blogspot.com/2006/05/climate-sensitivity-and-editorial.html). Every molecule of CO2 added to the atmosphere contributes less to warming than the previous one. The book’s graph on p. 66-67 is seriously misleading. Moreover, even the historical levels of CO2 shown on the graph are disputed. Evidence from plant fossil-remains suggest that there was as much CO2 in the atmosphere about 11,000 years ago as there is today.

2. Kilimanjaro. The snows of Kilimanjaro are melting not because of global warming but because of a local climate shift that began 100 years ago. The authors of a report in the International Journal of Climatology “develop a new concept for investigating the retreat of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, based on the physical understanding of glacier–climate interactions.” They note that, “The concept considers the peculiarities of the mountain and implies that climatological processes other than air temperature control the ice recession in a direct manner. A drastic drop in atmospheric moisture at the end of the 19th century and the ensuing drier climatic conditions are likely forcing glacier retreat on Kilimanjaro.”

3. Glaciers. Glaciers around the world have been receding at around the same pace for over 100 years. Research (http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/short/0603118103v1) published by the National Academy of Sciences last week indicates that the Peruvian glacier on p. 53-53 probably disappeared a few thousand years ago.

4. The Medieval Warm Period. Al Gore says that the “hockey stick” graph that shows temperatures remarkably steady for the last 1,000 years has been validated, and ridicules the concept of a “medieval warm period.” That’s not the case. Last year, a team of leading paleoclimatologists said, “When matching existing temperature reconstructions…the timeseries display a reasonably coherent picture of major climatic episodes: ‘Medieval Warm Period,’ ‘Little Ice Age’ and ‘Recent Warming.’” They go on to conclude, “So what would it mean, if the reconstructions indicate a larger…or smaller…temperature amplitude? We suggest that the former situation, i.e. enhanced variability during pre-industrial times, would result in a redistribution of weight towards the role of natural factors in forcing temperature changes, thereby relatively devaluing the impact of anthropogenic emissions and affecting future temperature predictions.”

The release of the NAS panel review of the Mann Hockey Stick (today) split the difference - they had to concede that as Mckitrish and McIntyre proved, the data was wrongly used, and the statistical methods used wrongly. It came as close as one can come to saying it was fraud...

Of course, they also said "the other models" which say global warming is happening still make it plausible that this is the warmest time in 400 years. What they don't mention is that the "other models" are by associates of Mann (or Mann himself) who use the same flawed data and questionable math.

It's disgusting - the politics behined climate studies is far worse than I imagined until I went to M & M's web sites.

Well, 400 years ago the Earth was in the middle of the Little Ice Age, so it's certainly likely that this is the warmest time in 400 years. Of course, that also means that that its highly likely the warming in the past 400 years - and in the past 100 years - is nothing more than the natural recovery from the Little Ice Age and has nothing to do with human activities.

Yes, the politics of global warming is disgusting, and the hypothesis of human-caused global warming is all a politics.

the Peruvian glacier on p. 53-53 probably disappeared a few thousand years ago.I remember that! Me´n N-T sacrificed an aurochs and barbecued it over burning coals of t-rex bones that Doc sent over from his latest excursion into the nether regions.

Here is the funny part.

The 400 years timeline starts in the LITTLE ICE AGE era!

2006-400=1606

Then with the increased solar irradiance that is reported to be at a 1000 year high.

It is not surprising that the "natural" temperature variation is on the increase.

My lib Dad (God help him!) phoned me yesterday and told me that they had gone to see Gore's film and that "it is a MUST SEE!!" That is shows what lies "that idiot George Bush tells!" As always, I am nearly speechless when he comes up with these type comments........1) Because the Bible says to honor your parents, so I shutup.....2) Because I am endlessly amazed that a retired MD who learned Scientific Method can be bamboozled by a FILM for crying out loud! I desperately wanted to say "So Dad.......does this mean Star Wars is true after all?????

I wish I could recall what Dr. Laura said when a listener said she had to keep her mouth shut in front of her parents because of the bible; it was something like "the bible said to honor your parents, not to put up with falsehoods that may harm someone else". Well, in my mind, supporting massive tax increases on our economy to pay for useless global warming programs is a form of slavery - stealing from others to pay for someones (your father's) irrational fears.

Good points Max, however I do not know how he and I could have that conversation without it getting ugly.
