French cyclist Jimmy Casper has won the first stage of the Tour de France, but American rider George Hincapie took the overall race lead.

Casper beat out Australia's Robbie McEwen and German veteran Erik Zabel in the finishing sprint of Sunday's 184.5 - kilometer stage, which started and ended in Strasbourg. All three men, along with most of the riders in the trailing pack, were credited with a time of 4:10 flat.

France must be stewing. Even with Armstrong gone they can't win.

Yeah, but I think that they found a way to win it this year.

There will be NO team time trials this year.

That's a major blow to those teams that are very strong in this discipline, namely Team Discovery and several other teams with American cyclists.

PLA-DE-BERET, Spain (AP) - American Floyd Landis took the race leader's yellow jersey on Thursday on the Tour de France's hardest stage in the Pyrenees, which was won by Russian Denis Menchov.

Landis took the lead from France's Cyril Dessel, confirming himself as the favorite to succeed seven-time champion Lance Armstrong, his former teammate.

They actually do have cycling tours/races/criteriums all across Europe, North/South America, Australia, Mexico, Japan...pretty much all over.

There is the Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a España, Regio Tour (Germany) and other major tours, one day races and criterium all over Europe, but the Tour de France is the big one. It's like the Superbowl or Daytona 500, except it goes on for 3 weeks.

Some other famous world cup, classics and one day races are the Amstel Gold Race (Netherlands), Milan San Remo, Paris Roubaix, and Tour of Flanders (Belgium).

America has its share of races, too. Tour of Georgia, Redlands Bicycle Classic (CA), Tour de 'Toona (PA), Wendy's International Cycling Classic (OH), Cascade (OR)...and the list goes on.

Move Over Lance, Here Comes Floyd Landis
By JOHN MORETTI - Special to the Sun
July 14, 2006

CANNES, France — It was not easy for the French to see the leader's yellow jersey pass from one of their own to an American on the eve of Bastille Day, especially after their nation's bitter loss in the World Cup final four days before. At least in this case, Floyd Landis, the strongest American presence on the Tour de France this year, was diplomatic after he ruined their party.
"Yeah, sorry about that," Landis offered to his interviewer on French television, who reminded him of France's national holiday on Friday." But I wanted [the yellow jersey] as much as anyone else."

Tour de France Stage 15 results

Landis finished fourth, 1 minute 10 seconds behind Schleck, but far enough ahead of former Tour leader, Oscar Pereiro Sio, to take back the yellow jersey.

Stage 17 Winner Landis (USA) Vaults Back Into Tour Title Hunt

Wins Last Alpine Stage

By JEROME PUGMIRE AP Sports Writer

MORZINE, France Jul 20, 2006 (AP)— In a stunning turnaround a day after he was all but written off, American rider Floyd Landis moved back into contention at the Tour de France on Thursday, winning the final Alpine stage in a solo finish to jump from 11th to third.

Landis, who lost the leader's yellow jersey Wednesday after struggling at the uphill finish, bounced back by bursting ahead of the main pack in the first of three tough ascents in the 17th stage.
