Ga. Appeals Restraining Order on Voter IDs

ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia's attorney general filed an emergency appeal Monday of a court order that blocks the state from enforcing its new voter photo identification law during next week's primary elections.

The new law requires that every voter who casts a ballot in person produce a valid, government-issued photo ID. Elections officials had already distributed several dozen of the new voter photo IDs to people, primarily seniors, who don't have a driver's license, passport or other qualifying photo ID.

Supporters say the ID requirement is needed to crack down on voter fraud. Opponents say it unfairly affects the poor, rural voters and minorities - people least likely to have a valid picture ID.

Attorney General Thurbert E. Baker filed the appeal in Georgia Supreme Court on behalf of Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue, said court spokesman Richard Diguette.

"We're pleased it's moving forward," Perdue spokesman Dan McLagan said of the appeal. "We can't for the life of us understand why the Democrats have been so hellbent on making it easier for dead people, felons and illegal immigrants to cast ballots in their primary.".........http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/G/GEORGIA_VOTER_ID?SITE=FLTAM&SECTION=US

So the state judges WANTS voting fraud to happen?

In his sharply worded ruling, Westmoreland said the voter ID law "unduly burdens the fundamental right to vote rather than regulate it" and would cause "irreparable harm."

Former Gov. Roy Barnes had requested the restraining order, arguing before the judge Thursday that the law violates the state's constitution's guarantee of the right to vote.Apparently, making sure you have the right to vote is an undue burden.

And I suppose they'll apply the same thing to driving here soon with this kind of thinking?

"O gee officer I forgot my drivers licence' and requiring me to carry it to prove I can drive is an 'undue burden' on my right to drive." WILL be next!

as Unfortunately many people think driving is a fundamental right as well, when in reality driving is a privilege, and voting is reserved for American citizens only.

Ga. Court Considers Halting Voter ID Law

By ERRIN HAINES
Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA (AP) -- A federal court is set to consider a request to block a Georgia law that requires voters to show photo identification less than a week before the law would apply for the first time at the polls.

Civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the AARP and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund plan to ask a federal judge Wednesday to halt the law.

Making voters go to the county registrar's office to get a picture ID is an inconvenience that does nothing to address fraud at the ballot box, said ACLU attorney Neil Bradley.

"It's a complete sham," Bradley said. "The possession of an ID is an unnecessary burden, since the oath that you execute to get the ID is the same one you'd use on Election Day."........http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/G/GEORGIA_VOTER_ID?SITE=FLTAM&SECTION=US

It May be an inconvenience, but then again getting ones drivers licence then would in the same argument be construed as an 'inconvenience' as well.

As far as I know ONLY American Citizens are allowed to vote, if this 'inconveniences' these whiners then gee, get legitimized and become citizens and prove it.

Otherwise S-Square!

The opposite is voter fraud and allowing foreigners to meddle in American elections illegally....

Voting is an inconvenience too, but they seem plenty willing to do that.

Indeed!!!

I have absolutely NO problem having several forms of ID in order to vote.

It isnt an 'inconvenience' to me to do so, its a Privilege for me to vote.

If Georgia isn't allowed to require voter ID, can we all go down and vote in Cynthia McKinney's district?

Supporters say the ID requirement is needed to crack down on voter fraud. Opponents say it unfairly affects the poor, rural voters, crack whores, drug dealers, illegal aliens, al Qaeda terrorists, dead people, felons, people who don't live in the sate and minorities - people least likely to have a valid picture ID.
In other words, people more likely to vote democreep. Who gives a damn about them?

It May be an inconvenience, but then again getting one's driver's licence then would in the same argument be construed as an 'inconvenience' as well. This seems to be the grandest and most overlooked irony of all. For years, Democrats pushed the moter-voter bill, making it easy for drivers getting their license to simultaneously register to vote.
