NYC Upper East Side Building Collapses After Explosion, Fire

Monday, July 10, 2006

NEW YORK — A gas explosion and possible suicide attempt on Monday were being investigated after an explosion caused a three-story New York City building to collapse into a smoky pile of rubble and several people were carried off on stretchers and firefighters doused the structure’s remains.

Early reports indicated three pedestrians, a doctor and two firefighters were injured in the blast, which scattered bricks, glass and splintered wood across the block and shattered windows in a neighboring building.

Across the street in the Regency Hotel, visitor Allan Schare and his family were jolted from sleep. “I heard and felt the explosion — my kids levitated out of bed,” he said.

“We first thought: earthquake. We’re from Los Angeles.”

Counterterrorism officials told FOX News there is no evidence to indicate the blast at the building on New York's East Side is related to terrorism........http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,202761,00.html

According to the NYFD, the doctor who owned the building was trying to commit suicide. Last report was that he is alive, but in critical condition.

If this is true, the SOB better hope he dies.

Blast, fire takes down New York City buildingSuicide attempt suspected; 15 injured in explosion but none dead

NEW YORK - A four-story building housing doctors’ offices collapsed and burned in an apparent gas explosion Monday after what witnesses described as a thunderous blast that rocked an upscale neighborhood just off Madison Avenue.
At least 15 people were injured, including at least six firefighters, the Fire Department said. One of the injured was the doctor who owned the building.
Fire Department Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said officials suspect the doctor, who was in critical condition, might have caused a natural gas leak in a suicide attempt. "It is possible it is a suicide [attempt]," he told WNBC-TV.
Shortly before the blast, a utility crew had been in the building next door responding to a report of a natural gas smell.
E-mail warning?
A police official told The Associated Press that the lawyer for the doctor’s wife contacted police recently and said that she had received an e-mail from him in which the physician, 66-year-old Nicholas Bartha, indicated he was contemplating suicide.
He was going through a difficult divorce and was being forced to sell the building, and authorities believe the explosion may have be related to a suicide attempt, the police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

My guess is, his casualty insurance won't pay off.

Now instead of having half of $10mil in the property settlement, he's got zip, zero, zilch, not to mention twenty five or thirty milti-million dollar law suits staring him in the face from the people he injured, as well as serious prison time.

That assumes he survives his injuries.
