John Derran Lackey (born October 23 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_23), 1978 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978), in Abilene, Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene%2C_Texas)) is a major league baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_league_baseball) pitcher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitcher) from Abilene, Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene%2C_Texas). He has played for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_Angels_of_Anaheim) his entire career and wears jersey number 41. He played American football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football), baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball) and basketball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball) at Abilene High School, winning all-district first team honors. He played one season of baseball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball) at University of Texas at Arlington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Texas_at_Arlington) before joining the Angels in 2002 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002).
Lackey forever became a hero to all Anaheim Angels fans on October 27 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_27), 2002, when the rookie was the winning pitcher in Game 7 (http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/baseballs_best/mlb_bb_gamepage.jsp?story_page=bb_02ws_gm7_sfnana) of the Angels' 2002 World Series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_World_Series) Championship. Lackey allowed only one earned run (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earned_run) on four hits while striking out four in five innings, allowing the Angels to hold an early lead to hand over to their dominant bullpen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullpen) trio of Brendan Donnelly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Donnelly), Francisco Rodríguez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Rodr%C3%ADguez_%28baseball_player%29), and Troy Percival (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_Percival) to seal their World Series title. Lackey became only the second rookie in World Series history to start and win Game 7 -- the other being Babe Adams of the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates.
On July 7, 2006, Lackey retired 27 batters in a row after giving up a leadoff double in the first inning to Mark Kotsay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Kotsay) of the Oakland Athletics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Athletics).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lackey
Recently Mr. Lackey has moved up to number 2 pitcher in the AL.
He's pitching this year is amasing and Its expected since he pitched so well in the 2002 world series game 7 and its about time he has gotten his groove and is making the LA Draft Dodgers look like fools and is taking the glory away from Oakland Ass****.
Seriously this guy is good and in the future I'd like to see this guy play for the Rangers or Astros and take them to the series and win. He might not be as fast as Nolan Ryan but his style is different and is the next best pitcher from texas. Nolan Ryan also played for the angels at one time which give me the Idea he wants walk the same path and eventually play for the Texas Rangers.
If Texas ever wants to win the Series this is the man who can do it for them.
Texas is long overdue for a World Series win.

Yeah, he is pretty good but I don't mind the fact that he has a hard time with the Red Sox!
He may be a good Texan pitcher but it'll be a long time before anyone can touch:

Lackey sucked for a while....In 2004 I believe he was awful. He is better now, but with pitchers, unless they string together at least 2 back to back seasons of being solid it doesn't mean much. Unless of course it's a rookie.

RL, I'm thinking the Yankees will be going after Barry Zito of the A's this winter. Why? Zito is a free agent and just hired Scott Boros as his agent. Boros gets the highest buck for his clients. (Jason Varitek, Derek Lowe, Johnny Damon). Zito has also never been on the D.L. so his durability will fetch him alot.
Zito will be staying in the A.L. too. The Red Sox, Braves, Mets and Yankees are the top dollar teams but Steinbrenner gives whatever someone wants as he has no budget. Zito to the Yanks. Lackey? Who knows! Texas has money now after unloading A-Rod and his contract.

Alex Rodriguez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5275) topped the list at $25.7 million and was No. 1 for the sixth straight year, according to a study of major league contracts by The Associated Press. Derek Jeter (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5406) was next at $20.6 million, followed by Jason Giambi (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5386) at $20.4 million.
San Francisco's Barry Bonds (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=3918) was fourth at $20 million, and Houston's Jeff Bagwell (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4626) -- who might not play because of a shoulder injury -- was next at $19.3 million.
"Baseball had record crowds last year," Giambi said. "Probably with Barry going to break the [home run] record, it will bump it up and more people will come out and watch it. That makes players more popular, and in turn guys make more money."
This year's $2,866,544 average was up 8.9 percent from last year's figure of $2,632,655.
The Yankees' payroll dropped a bit to $198.7 million from $205.9 million on Opening Day last year. Boston was second again at $120.1 million, followed by the Los Angeles Angels (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=laa) ($103.6 million), the World Series champion Chicago White Sox (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=cha) ($102.9 million) and the New York Mets (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nym) ($100.9 million).

Your location shows up in California. Lemme tell you why the Rangers will NEVER win anything. It's too damn hot. The Sweatbox in Arlington has to be the most uncomfortable baseball stadium in MLB. Old Arlington Stadium was better--there was a breeze from the southwest. The Sweatbox is enclosed. The players and fans literally wilt from late June onwards. Pitchers die in this atmosphere. I remember being out there in the old stadium back in the mid 70s. It was September and it was 107 degrees that afternoon. Tony Dorsett was making his debut for the Cowboys the same day. I still wish like hell I'd stayed home to watch TD's first game, instead of that useless, sweaty misery against the Twins. It's that way EVERY year.

Its like 100 degrees where I am moving to in california.
Even hotter in Anaheim and Anaheim is where the angels play home games at. I dont think weather has much to do with it plus since the opposing team has to deal with the weather as well but I can see where it would make it harder to train the team.

Tell that to George Steinbrenner who thinks money buys championships. It seems that the more he spends the further he gets from another title.

200 million dollars for a team that had 2 players that smashed into each other in 2005 against the angels. Not to mention Mussina got breached by the angels who have not as good of batters. Angels Offense has always been shit and relies on luck lol
Yankees have got to change their ways and learn from the Redsox and Angels that money doesnt buy champions. Of course the Angels and Redsox are the runners up on spending, but they won the series only a few years ago which boosted their income and put them on the map.
He actually lost a bid on Jose Canteras to the whitesox a few years ago and CWS takes the series but really had the whitesox not had canteras would it really make a difference or was this the one time the yankees might have benifeted from more spending. Who knows.
I'm embarrased on the angels for being number 3 on spending, they once were the worse team of the MLB that payed pennies for their players and now they are like top 3 spenders lol.
Oh I remember the days going to Angels games watching them lose terribly to the Blue Jays lol.:rotflmbo:
Congrats to Florida Marlins for being the most fiscally conservative team ! :claps: :claps: :claps:

The Red Sox only spend the way they do for one reason, to compete with the Yankees. Nothing more, nothing less. Fans are willing to pay for the tickets through it all, which Fenway is now the most expensive seat in MLB.

Beo, c'mon you know better. The Red Sox are number 2 in payroll, if they had Gerogies cash they'd be forking it out too, don't play yourself. I don't see how anyone can rag on a guy whp puts everything (including money) into his team to win. It isn't his fault that Shef, Matsui and Zambrano are hurt, with those three back the Yankees would be ahead in the AL East by a couple games. Either way they will still be in the playoffs with their complete team and thats gotta be scary for the league.
I can't wait to see the Red Sox crumble in late August this year.

Yeah? And they WON the WS with it. All of King George's spending hasn't done that yet.

Point is, they don't. Funny, they didn't match the offer on Damon (thank God) and got a better, cheaper CF in Coco Crisp. Make no mistake, I'm greatful for Damon for what he did.

I'm not!

No, it isn't, but your pitching is way inconsistent. I don't think those guys would have made a difference.

With most of their games at home the last half of the year, I have faith the Sox will do fine. As far as your what, 9 or 10 year consecutive A.L. East titles go? All good things do come to an end.

Really? '96, '98, '99, '00 don't count? Making it in '01 and '03 Don't count? Winning the AL East 9 times doesn't count? 26 WC and 32 Pennants don't count? Okay, you can wait another 86 years to win again. I'll stop talking when The Red Sox win another World Series in this decade...even then it doesn't live up to the three-peat, but it will at least establish them as a year in-year out contender like the Yanks. Again, you can't blame George for wanting to be the best, I know some owners only care about how much money they make.
Point is, they don't. Funny, they didn't match the offer on Damon (thank God) and got a better, cheaper CF in Coco Crisp. Make no mistake, I'm greatful for Damon for what he did.
Yeah, he may or may not be worth it. He is doing nicely for us though. How is Coco Crisp (the cereal) doing for you? I'll give you that one, I think Damon is over-paid.
No, it isn't, but your pitching is way inconsistent. I don't think those guys would have made a difference.
Yes, this is the first time in a while that our pitching has been so inconsistent. I think it'll get worked out, usually does. HA! Zambrano would be making a huge difference, no doubt about it. Without Matsui who was on an absolute tear before he went down, and Sheff we lost two solid power hitters and two guys who hit for .300 or better for as long as they have been with the Yanks. I think it hurts alot more than you may think. We lost at least 15-25 HR HR's not to mention doubles from losing them, those could be the difference in alot of our 1-3 run losses-of which we have had alot. In a division split by 2.5 games it could be all the difference, we will never know though. Props to RedSox for staying healthy.

FYI, it wasn't until just after 2000, when you last won it, that King George started on his spending spree. It's one thing to spend the money but try buying some youthful talent instead of veterans who are well passed their prime. (Randy Johnson, Jared Wright) I know we did that with David Wells. Fortunately, we're doing fine without him.
And it won't be another 86 years. You wanna bust a team with a long wait, bug the Cubbies!

Maybe it wasn't until after 200 that he "went on a spree" but at the time we still had the highest payroll so thats what I meant.
Also, I agree about the youth. Especially with pitching, they tend to trade prospects too much. Such as Claussen the lefty, he has turned out decent. Jered Wright isn't so old, he is struggling. Mussina is our horse right now, Randy will hopefully turn it on for good and Wang has been preety darn good. With Zambrano back, and now we have Ponson who is disposable if he dont perform. I think we would be above average in the dept.
Like I said we should have kept Soriano, saved the money and went for some pitching. I mean our Lineup is killer all said and done, Giambi, A-Rod, Sheff(BA too), Matsui(BA too), Posada, Bernie can all hit for power. Jeter (.344 BA), Damon, Cano all hit for average and are speedy. Jeter is still the most clutch fielder in the game, and I would rather have him up at bat over anyone in a all or nothing situation (on our team).
Then of course, Mo is lights out. Our bullpen has been solid. I miss Tom Gordon setting up, gotta admit.
Can't wait to see how it all plays out.

I'm not a fan of the yankees, but they can seriously improve their team by: 1. Get rid of A-Rod, send him to the minors or have the Mafia take care of him. 2. Getting more pitchers with good ERA would combine nicely with their lineup of Homerun hitters.
If they had a pitcher with an ERA like lackey or liriano they'd be winning more.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/sortableStats?league=AL&position=&timeframe=season&stable=pitching&stat=ERA&dir=ascending&start=1&end=50&season=
Mussina is the 1of the 2 NYY pitchers with good stats this year. He's got a good amount of wins to go with it.
Lackey is pitching better then Johnson which isnt good.
As far as pitching goes, I'd say the twins are on fire. They got one guy with #1 ERA and one with #1 on strikeouts.
CWS aint doing so well on pitching as they did last year.

With Moose, Johnson, Zambrano (he'll be recovered for playoffs)...I'm not worried. Then we have Chen who has done well, Jered Wright (struggled), Ponson, Chacon (was nasty last year-starting to come around, picked up win in sweep of Rangers). Also Octavio Dotel will be healthy soon. So with 4 options at the 5 hole, and the other 3 in the pen I don't think we are in bad shape. Our pen has been solid, of course, Mo is the anchor.
Th Yanks have taken the Wild Card lead completing the sweep of the Rangers while WS have dropped 10 of 12 since the All Star break, they are 1 1/2 game back of the RS for the division. Not bad for inconsistent pitching, and three top players out (Matsui, Sheff, Zambrano). The Yanks don't know how to lose, that's why I love them. I think we will be just fine, althogh I think we should trade A-rod only if, we can get a superb starter, a solid set-up man and a prospect at 3rd (like from TB).

Actually I'd be thrilled to see Arod traded for Soriano...reverse from when we got A-rod....
Even though Canu is doing very well. Only problem would be how to have both in the lineup (DH is possibility). Canu plays a solid 2B and Soriano has been playing Left Field where we have a Matsui.

They might if they offer enough for him.
They are gonna want a big hitter after losing (Bengie Molina) and bengie molina was plagued by injuries and being numeriously hit by other teams pitchers. Who knows maybe Hugo Chavez's team *cough* CWS *cough* will buy him if Hugo sends a little check over in the mail.
Tigers will eventually get killed off in the post season and same with Oakland Asses and Draft Dodgers. Oakland always gets eliminated at post season no matter how good they do during the season.
My prediction is Twins are going far this year. I think they have it this year.

Update: Lackey won against Curt Shilling.
Curt Shilling allowed 3 home runs in the 3rd innings plus 3 more runs before that.
I am still shocked at that result.

Well, Sox need to pull themselves back together. Still, Lackey is 1-4 careerwise vs. the Sox so I still don't mind seeing him on the mound!!
