The internet is a wonderful resource, able to educate and inform us about pornography from all corners of the globe. But the net’s secondary function, as a source of news, can be problematic. Especially for gentlemen of a certain vintage who trade in the columnar arts. A little knowledge of the internet can be a very dangerous thing, as The Sydney Morning Herald’s Alan Ramsey discovered last year, when he repeated a bogus online claim that Reagan-era secretary of the interior James Watt once announced: “After the last tree is felled, Christ will come back.” Watt never said any such thing, as a few minutes’ further web searching would have revealed.

Latest to fall for the minimal-research trap is The Sunday Age’s Terry Lane, whose most recent column demanded that the Australian government “hold an inquiry into the video evidence of US Army Ranger Jessie Macbeth”. According to Lane: “Macbeth served in Iraq for 16 months and regrets that he was ever part of the invasion and occupation.” In fact, as was widely reported months ago, Macbeth never served in Iraq; the sum total of his military experience amounted to 43 days of basic training in Georgia. His tale of witnessing atrocities in Iraq – exposed online by investigators from the left and right – was a complete fabrication. It’s remarkable that not only Lane missed this, but so did his editors. Dudes should learn about this thing called Google.

Don't confuse them with facts. They just get in the way.
