Thousands of soldiers have been hazed and bullied this year - some fatally, Russia's chief prosecutor said Friday in the first acknowledgment from authorities who had previously sought to downplay the problem.
Seventeen servicemen died from bullying in the first half of 2006 and another 120 were injured, Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika said. Overall, more than 3,500 servicemen have been subjected to bullying, he said.
"The crime situation in the armed forces remains very tense," Chaika told a meeting of military prosecutors in televised remarks.
