OK. What is your nomination for movies that should not have been remade but were remade nonetheless? You can go back as far as you wish.

I think classic movies should be left alone. They can never capture what the original had no matter how much new graphics, profanity and nudity they add. I think hollywood just has no new ideas and so they can only remake that which has been done already. It's a very sad reflection on the creativity of today's movie makers.

Aye MSGT, Good one. I forgot about that Joke of a "Pink Panther" that Steve Martin lowerd his standards enough to make. And I have the entire Peter Sellers collection on DVD which has all the Pink Panther movies, as well as "A Shot In The Dark", and his ultimate movie: "The Party". The Original Pink Panthers can never be topped.

King Kong - way overrated. In the original we did care about the ape. We really did. But in remake number 2 they wanted you to bawl your eyes out. We didn't need 3 hours to expand the themes of the original. It should have been left alone.

Dial M For Murder/A Perfect Murder: Paltrow and Douglas were poor imitations of Milland and Kelly.

In my list: original/remake
The Bishop's Wife/The Preacher's Wife------
I never watched the remake because I never saw the need for the re-make in the first place.
Conrack/The Water is Wide-----
The remake was okay, but unnecessary.
The Lathe of Heaven/Lathe of Heaven-----
These two were nearly identical, if I remember correctly. The remake was unnecessary, although maybe they did it because maybe they thought the original had been forgotten since it had been made 12 years previous.
When they re-did the Twilight Zone series in 1985, it was not very good, but when the re-did it again in 2002, I think it came close to the quality of the original.
I never saw the Pink Panther re-do, because I didn't think it would be good.
In the case of the Fantasy Island series re-do, I think the re-do was better than the original, in some ways. I think Malcolm McDowell was an excellent Mr. Roarke.
The 1999 Noah's Ark re-do was bad. I would not recommend it at all. The original was 1929, but is largely unknown now. I really like it.
Then there are the mild action movies or tv series, or the plain ordinary police movies and tv series that are re-done, like Mission Impossible, for example. I think the re-make was way overdone, but I only know that from the previews.
The worst was the movie re-do of Lost in Space. That was horrible. I also didn't like the My Favorite Martian re-do. There's no way you can re-do Ray Walston and Bill Bixby. No way.

Yours, Mine and Ours absolutely. The second was a travesty. The first followed the true original story pretty closely. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is just plain scary. My kids refused to see it after seeing the trailers. Of course Johnny No-Depth is persona non grata in this house anyway.

I have to disagree here. The Carpenter remake of The Thing did follow the original short story more closely but I thought it was more gross-out than frightening.
I also didn't care for Carpenter's remake of Village of the Damned.
In remaking the movies, he was trying to pay tribute to the original movies.
Carpenter better stay away from The Day the Earth Stood Still and Forbidden Planet!
Aww, Carpenter's was a great movie.
John Carpenter's Thing wasn't really a remake. I love that movie.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is just plain scary.
I think Gene Wilder's Wonka was way more sinister than Depp's could ever be.
How long until some dumbass remakes It's a Wonderful Life?

John Carpenter's Thing wasn't really a remake.
True. It was a much more faithful adaptation of the 1938 John W. Campbell Jr. story Who Goes There. The 1951 film version had very little to do with the Campbell story.

You knew they'd stepped over the line when they remade The Manchurian Candidate.

I didn't know they'd made a new Psycho.
But then, I never saw the old one.
I did see the Psycho house on the Universal backlot in 1979. Wally and Beaver's house, too.
No one should ever be allowed to mess with a Hitchcock movie. To remake anything Hitchcock did should be an ofense punishable by death.
